Agreed, I never had a chrome oil pan, but I've junked a timing cover and valve covers...checked valve covers though and they were far from straight

might it be because of the surface being so smooth from the chroming process? i think that's why chrome tin parts tend to leak. maybe a little roughing up from steel wool would help the gasket material get a better bite on the metal allowing for a better seal. i bet it'd work.
