2nd gen Toyota MR2 is another good application for electric PS that doesn't require a controller. Good to know about this Volvo option too though.

The MR2 Spyder parts are even harder to find than this. Believe me, I looked. Hell, I even looked at other industrial-type hydraulic pumps. These Volvo units had about a decade's worth of use across multiple platforms.

I need to file this pump in my future build ideas folder.

I had a hard reality check when I last moved this car around on 275s and no power steering... even worse when using a power steering box than a manual box. Skinny over-inflated tires are sort of workable at low speeds. My brother has a manual box I could have used - but, well pandemic reasons ruined that.

So what to do?

Electric Hydraulic Power Steering (EHPS)!

I now have a Volvo remote mount-style EHPS pump on the way from Florida (4N513K514DJ) which should come complete with all the bits and pieces needed less the adapter for a 14mm to -6 AN (AT991954ERL or similar) from the pump and a whatever size I need to go from the steering box pressure side to -6AN. The advantage of this pump is that it doesn't require a controller like other options. It is just power and ground. They are very common in Europe, and very cheap. I couldn't get one in my region of the world - and had to bring it in from the States for that reason. I'll have to decide if want to install a PS cooler on the return side. Because who knows? I might try autocrossing this thing.

There is a non-remote mount pump version - this just gives me more flexibility on where I choose to install it... since some donkey cluttered the engine bay with a turbo and the like. Evidently you can mount these in the trunk.

Uh oh... it is made by Ford. There goes any reliability I once had...

There are a couple of very good write-ups here:

I just keep making problems for myself... daily.
Isn't that the point of it all? All about making headaches

Just pump more iron. I thought you had that car on a diet? 😎

I should, and I did. The original plan was for a manual rack from TRZ. But, the planned use of wider front tires (245-255s on the 17s) became a sobering reality with these Z06 wheels/tire that I will need PS regardless on the street.

The manual box would not be ideal as it was meant for barer bones vehicles.

So for now I am going to take the weight penalty.

Finally got around to buttoning up the gapping holes in the frame. I cut an extra inch off the backside before slapping in some steel. Both sides are essentially the same.

I'll paint it whenever. But, at least for now the frame rails won't fill up with rocks and discarded masks and things.

I’ll never understand why everyone just boxes in the openings squared off like that. It wouldn’t take much more work to taper them in gradually like factory past the wheel tub so you’re still not losing any tire real estate. It would look more natural and less like an afterthought IMO.
To each their own I guess.
