I really think this whole thing is a damn riot. Whoever started this(I can't remember)has well and truly started a sh*t storm of major proportions. But you know what? That's exactly what forums are for: COMMENTS, IDEAS, AND SUGGESTIONS, ALSO QUESTIONS. And no ones idea is any more important than another. You guys keep up the good work. Oh, by the way, the "tilt nose" on my Willys Coupe, I have decided that it's CUSTOM. I designed it, I created it, ergo, CUSTOM.
................mickey-d

im 100% with you but according to post #1 you copied someone.... thats what upsets me, i for example shaved my firewall on my regal, it isnt real common but i saw it on someone elses car and thought thats pretty sweet so i did it. call it a copy, its still custom. if you get down to it everyone is copying one another, someone decided to paint a car now all cars have paint right? he said chip foose is custom, sure his style is unique but its is based on a combination of stuff that has been done before. my car is based on a combination of everything that i have seen and liked and turned into a one of a kind custom based on what i like. i dont really care for a honda civic or a donk but i sure as hell will have repect for that person expressing their personality

the post that ends all:

I don't feel like I copied anyone. How many people have made a tilt nose on a 41 Willys with 2, six inch, $3.00 gate hinges??

sorry to prove you wrong treed, but if you are going the english route webster would beg to differ.
i.word.com/idictionary/custom
custom
Function: adjective
Date: 1830

1 : made or performed according to personal order
2 : specializing in custom work or operation <a custom tailor>

so would dictionary.com
dictionary.reference.com/browse/custom

adjective
12.
made specially for individual customers: custom shoes.
13.
dealing in things so made, or doing work to order: a custom tailor.

according to the english language as long as its a custom order (ie a custom harley paint job) or customized by or for you then it is custom.
/thread
(end thread for those that dont understand techno language lol)

OIC, so Buick custom made the Regal just for you? Wrong. Buick made the Regal for however many people bought the car. There's nothing custom about it. Again, if you buy a size medium t-shirt from walmart and scribble on it with a felt, it's not custom, it's still just a mass-produced walmart shirt with some felt on it.

It IS just a SIMPLE matter of words, and what people are doing to these cars is MODIFYING, it's literally impossible for a mass produced item to be "custom". It was never made for one person in particular, it was made for the masses.

I already quoted dictionary.com, you're not showing me anything new.

If you took some sheet metal and formed up some fenders to look exactly the way you wanted them to look, then formed up a roof, quarter panels, floor pans on and on and on, and built a whole car, THAT is a custom! Other than that, it's a modified buick regal, just as your t-shirt with felt on it is a modified, size medium walmart t-shirt. IT'S NOT CUSTOM. IT'S PRODUCED FOR THE MASSES TO CONSUME AND USE.

hate to even chime in again. so treed_cutlass at what point would you say a car becomes a "custom"? i have a car that is built/in the process of being built to exactly what i want it which includes pretty much everything on the car modified, read my signature for a quick description of my regal, literally nothing is stock about it but since i "copied" everyone elses ideas to create my own concept it is not a custom but customized? not trying to start a fight nor was i earlier but this doesnt make sense

A car becomes custom when THE WHOLE FRIGGIN THING is built to someone's exacting specifications. In other words, you take raw materials and build a car. I'm not sure if such a thing exists.

If you have a custom interior made, they take leather, ostrich, vinyl, velour, or whatever base material and craft it into an interior. This is a custom interior. If you put that interior in a regal, it's still just a buick regal with a custom interior. It's not a Custom Buick Regal. Again, no such thing exists. A Buick Regal is a one-size-fits-many car, designed for multiple people to use, and is therefore, not custom. You are just MODIFYING a Buick Regal. That is all. You didn't make that friggin Regal. The idea of a Buick Regal is not from YOUR HEAD. IT DOESN'T MATCH YOUR EXACTING SPECIFICATIONS.

If you're building this Regal to exactly what you want, then why is it a Buick Regal? Why did someone else furnish the starting point for you? Because it IS NOT exactly what you wanted, it's what GM wanted you to want. Why isn't it a regalman4952-mobile? Because you didn't custom-make it! That's why!

Another thing, you're supposedly in the process of "building" this car. Ummm... I'm sorry to inform you, it's too late, GM already built it! You're about 25 years too late. Sorry about that. What you're doing is rebuilding and modifying it.

EDIT: And everyone is copying someone. Actually we're all copying a lot of people. The people at GM that designed all the G-body cars. When we bought our g-bodies, we all bought copies. If you buy someone elses' idea of a car, your car ain't custom!

Anyhow, I'm pretty much done looking at and responding to this thread.

Basically, if you don't know English, and can't accept what a word means, I can't help you.

Try highschool again? Look in a dictionary? I don't know what else to tell you...

If you have bought a product and can't deal with the fact that it's not a perfectly unique individual thing like a beautiful snowflake, I'm sure there are several cliffs nearby that you could jump off of. That's life. You're not unique. Neither is your mass-produced cookie-cutter car. No matter how much you have modified it, it's still just a GM G-body car with modifications.

so what you are saying is all of us that say we have custom cars, the fact that we started with a car someone else designed could never be custom? so pretty much the racing, pro touring, mini truck, lowrider and street rod communities..... rod and custom magazine, street customs magazine.... anyone that uses the word custom is wrong?? we have a section on this forum called lowriders and custom, if what you are saying is correct that section could not exist because a g body is in no way a custom according to you..... the entire car community has their heads in their azz calling anything custom becuase we started out with a car that we didnt create..... i have helped build 150,000 dollar street rods that started out as stock cars and now the only thing stock is the body, what can i call that?? you are saying that it can not be custom....

and as far as the insults go telling me to go back to high school, is that really needed?? if my education matters then my college backround would kind help my arguement but we are not gonna go there.

sited: http://encarta.msn.com/dictionary_/custom.html
