I was speaking with the guy selling me the center section, he is telling me that a 28 spline 9" is weak, an can barely handle a mildly built v8. I'm hoping that he isn't right, because $700 is alot to spend for a grenade. He's telling me I need 31 spline stuff to handle a built v8?? Seems like everyone here is happy with my decision, and I haven't heard the 28 spline rearend is a bad choice. So I hope I'm doin the right thing . I will be running a 383 striker with @ 400 hip hopefully, and a t10 4 speed trans? Will I be ok with the 28 spline??

I wouldnt worry about it.
My big block is making 550 + HP at the flywheel, with a 5 speed manual transmission.
My 28 spline rearend has seen its fair share of abuse for 7 or more years now, still holding up just fine.
Sounds like he is trying to upgrade you at the expense of a lighter wallet.

You have no worries. I have an 8.2 with 28 spline axles and I have a little more than 400 hp with a 5 speed stick. The 8.2 can handle up to 500 hp. But not all 28 spline axles are the same, mine are weaker than a Ford's 28 spline. The splines in a GM axle are cold rolled, the splines in a Ford's axle are machined. Machined axles beat out cold rolled any day plus you can cut machine axles to suit your purpose but you can't cut a cold rolled axle. For the center section the reason Fords are stronger is the pinion gear has a bearing on each end. The GM has their pinion hanging and it tries to walk away from the crown gear. The Ford being supported on both ends doesn't have that problem.

Well thats great to hear, I couldn't see how the guy Im buying the rearend from wanted it, and had it for a circle track asphalt late model if it would be to weak to handle it. Most late models run lockers, or spools around here also. thanks for the help guys!
