driving the 84 elkie I noticed a noise from the brake drum shook rear of car side toside noticed a lot of slack in the axles what is the common cause and cure for this ?

the axles always has some slack, how much are you talking about and what did you find when you took off the drum that was making noise?
The axles, with the drum and wheel attached, will shuck back and forth almost a 1/16" to 1/8" - by design. And they can be worse if the 'c' clips or axles are worn badly at the 'c' clip area. I agree with pontiacgp, get the drums off and see what making the raquet. Probably it'll be something other than an axle issue.
