I'll second the acetone but I've heard power steering fluid, I'm sure either will work, The acetone solvency carries the ATF/PS fluid to the nooks and crannies. Hell, I don't even mind the fill it full of used oil method. Most probably has the rings sticking to the cylinders, maybe the acetone combo on top of the pistons, bunch o' oil in the crankcase.

Yes it's Diesel Fuel not Diesel Oil. About a cup per cylinder. Also summer Diesel fuel not winter diesel fuel. Winter is thinner.

An if it makes a different it was Dyed fuel, lol!

Even after my Grandfather used it l've used it to free up engines on Snowmobiles, Dirtbike an 1 olds 455. Takes alittle running time to free up rings but it will.

I believe acetone also helps dry up any residual moisture internally.

. ATF and acetone? Would not the acetone flash off pretty quick?

Fairly quickly, but will help get the ATF into places it would otherwise not soak into. It is my goto for any mixed metal situation. (steel bolt in aluminum housing or stainless steel bolt in mild steel block)

Pour it in the cylinders and put the plugs back in so it doesn't evaporate

WOW! All good advice, thanks guys. Maybe I'll whip up a radioactive brew with a little of everything.
diesel fuel oil?
Well around here diesel fuel and fuel oil for heating are one and the same- #2 oil. The only difference is the dye and that is for tax purposes. I have about 25 gallons saved from when we converted to gas heat. It makes a great safe cleaning solvent. If you need to clean a cylinder head just soak it for a week and it will come out looking like it was hot tanked.

I have my valves from my old vortec heads sitting in diesel fuel to clean them up.

and i should add I never even thought of soaking my heads in diesel fuel but I am going to do that, thanks Mark
