Duals....X pipe vs H pipe

Many times it comes down to fitment with the H-pipe being a little easier than an X-pipe, I made an H-pipe set up for my Monte.due to the size of the exhaust.

I have had both x and h on 2 different el caminos.. The H was a 305 engine putting out 230hp at the crank. Sounded godly with unkown flowmasters on.

The x was a 350 with 320hp. It didnt sound nearly as good. But i used hooker aero chamber flowthrough mufflers on that one so that also changes things some.

But my conclusion was that from now on i'll stick to H pipes and chambered mufflers. Much more muscle sound. The x was more raspy and high pitch. And more drone'i(
Thanks for your input. It gave me the confirmation that ai was looking for. He pipe chambered mufflers got it. I'm thinking Flowmaster''s 40 series

For one, a chevy V8 will sound different than an Olds V8, without a doubt. I went from a single to a Hooker Cat Back system, gained big time in the seat of the pants. Gained that much more with duals and a compact X pipe. Olds single exhaust is horrible, chevy was much better, even cat back with a test pipe still isn't great. On the 1985 FE3X prototype, Olds gained 30 hp with a decent Y pipe, better cat, shorty headers and a 70 style ram air cleaner. Mine is all 2.5", which is what you want, with Hooker Aerochamber mufflers exiting behind the tires. Quiet at idle, very noticeable when you step on it. I have an Olds 350 with 9.5 to 1 with filled heads with a 204/214 cam. Your motor will no doubt be lumpier but otherwise sound similar, especially with both having no exhaust crossover in the heads. I will take pics and fire it up tomorrow and put up a link to a sound clip.

Here is what I just had done to a 72 Olds 350

I am running Sanderson shorty ceramic coated O351 with 1 5/8" primary and 3" collector with this custom system from the X pipe foward. Behind is a Hooker cat back system.

Today I just purchased a set of Dynomax ceramic headers, I forget the dimensions but as soon as they arrive I can post that info. I want to say they were 2 and a little more, but I don't know for sure. I saw them posted on GBF and jumped on them. He only wanted $125, but my total came up to $180 with shipping.

I do know the collector was 3"

Wow I just looked at all the spelling errors sorry. Really I'm not illiterate 🙂 OK the header I bought are aluminunized not ceramic coated. I was going by the box.imagejpeg_0.jpg

Those should be 1 3/4" primary tubes, good for your motor.
