I know my 4.3 ran like that when I had a bad vacuum leak. Would only stay on if I stayed on the gas . I would check all your vacuum lines make sure hoses ain't cracked and leaking.

Lowproelco said:i had the same problem mine would start right up then die and would not idel and i have the 1406 edelbrock... come to find out it had nothin to do with the carb there was a tear in the diaphram in the fuel pump.. it was getting enough gas to start and enough if you put ur foot in it but not enough to idel drove me crazy for weeks until i found out the real problem....
