Neighbor and his helper tried to burn me out again yesterday.

No real damage done. Truth be told, burning up that scrubby thorn tree did me a favor. Now it'll be easier to cut back and give me more room for my garden. I walked down there and talked to them as they got it under control. They were pretty worried about the power pole but my concern was the tractor. I've talked to the old hippy farm hand before but hadn't met the boss as he lives a mile or two away. Seem like good guys. They're getting ready to start irrigating the hillside next to me so I'll probably see cattle there more regularly now.

Got a late start today but put some fresh gas and a jump box on the BroHauler and it fired right up. Dragged my driveway again then mowed the lower lawn. Also started rounding things up for the garden and making my plan.

I had these short leftover railroad ties so I made a little bridge about halfway down.

Picture doesn't do justice to depth perception. I also understand its fairly arid there much of the time?

I'd think the depth of the railroad tie would take away from depth of the canal? It doesn't show a slight ramp up to the tie, more like it's set down into the bank to be flush with nearby ground. Probably doesn't matter though, I mean you removed a 12" culvert that was buried so I'm guessing the thing is pretty deep as is.

Just wonder if there's ever higher flow situations that need the extra depth?

Play it up a little more than that... how that was a nice wind and vision break for the property, now you need to get rid of it... get them to throw in a nice side of beef to make up for it all.

Fixed that one for you, unless prevailing winds go the other direction...

Yeah, that photo is horrible with the tree branch shadows and no scale. They aren't set into the ground I tossed some dirt approaches on both ends. It's not much more than 12" high now but it's about 2' wide and no restriction so it should be okay. The whole ditch needs to be dug out deep and narrow from end to end in the next year or two.

Funny you mention the side of beef. He actually offered me beef any time I want it. He has Holsteins, which I'm told are more lean than most people prefer.
And there are a couple pretty large dairies within a few miles so it occasionally smells like cattle country. Not all that often though.

Oddly enough, cattle country (or farm country where they spread liquified manure) smell pretty bad from my past experience, but, swamp country smells worse IMO after I moved down to coastal georgia. Given the two I'd take cattle country - it smells intermittently, but swamp gas is ALL the time until it's drained and built up. Then you've got a whole different quality of life issue.

I finished the culvert and moved more dirt around.

Then I mowed the lower pasture area. Hard to believe half of this was chest high grass and brush and the other half was a gravel parking lot when I bought the place. Almost ready for fence and irrigation.

Today I antisocial distanced in the hills.

6 feet apart, you irresponsible ****ers!

I actually have been working on garden stuff but hit a roadblock yesterday afternoon. When the sun came up this morning it was just too nice to work. I did an impromptu solo ride. I had a route in my head but when I hit an unexpected 30 miles of gravel I decided to call an audible and double back then reroute. My 300 mile ride turned into a 396 mile ride in the opposite direction. I didn't ride through any snow but rode next to plenty. I probably should have been wearing gloves.

Hills, then desert, then more hills, then valleys, then more hills, then desert, then river canyon, then farm land, then home. Counted 5 summits between 5200 and 5500' and two more above 4000'. Climb and coast was the theme of the day.

Didn't fall off, didn't break down, didn't get eaten by sage rats. 48mpg. It was a pretty perfect day.

Beautiful country!

No wonder why you moved their. Lots of sights and not many people!
