Re: First carb rebuild....fail

I check my cylinders to see if they are firing ok with a infrared thrmo gun. It's easy with headers and any cylinder cooler than the others has a problem

Alright, so i fueled up the carb while it's off the car by running a long fuel line hose from the pump to the carb and setting the carb on my bench. i used a "trigger starter" to turn over the engine. The carb does not leak, and fires fuel as it should when i operate the throttle." Now THAT is a headscratcher and a half. Double check the fuel pump, the long hose may have absorbed the excess pressure, if there is any.

Re: First carb rebuild....fail

Try using a adjustable fuel pressure regulator (I beleive NAPA carries them) between the pump & carb. You can then trim your fuel pressure down gradually to see if it changes anything.

Re: First carb rebuild....fail

You know, the way i had to "rig" the fuel line allowed it to leak very, VERY, slightly.

I did notice one thing i can't explain when i had the carb back on the car, and after it had choked out, I thought i heard what sounds like gas boiling through the vent tube.

What i mean by that is, i could hear a sound that sounded similar to bumbling/ boiling liquid echo through i THINK the vent tube.

I'll check the fuel pressure tomorrow and see whats going on.

Also going to pop the dizzy cap off and see what the deal is under there. I'm still convinced it's carb related, because the ****er at least idled and ran half decent before i rebuilt the carb.

Re: First carb rebuild....fail

Sounds like percolation or boiling of the fuel in the carb bowl. The first thing that comes to mind is the EFE valve malfunctioning. (also known as the heat riser valve) If the EFE valve is not opening after the engine has warmed up, it can cause the fuel in the carb to boil. Check your vacuum hoses to te EFE valve for correct routing.

Re: First carb rebuild....fail

Don't have an EFE valve installed, no emissions at all actually.

I'm starting soon, checking fuel pressure first today.

Then pulling plugs and seeing whats up.

From there i'm going to check my plug wires. I noticed something examining them last night, they;re at set of MSD 8.5s that i bought 2 years ago and kept them in a box after using them for a few months, and they have slight dryrott cracking, could be bad.

Then im pulling my dist cap to see how nasty it is under there. Honestly i forgot totally about rebuilding my dizzy, i was very preoccupied with the carb, and rebuilding EVERYTHING else.

IF the dist is in rough shape, i'm thinking about taking my SBC ( and i think SBC only) mallory and borrowing the electronics for now.

What i do know for a fact, is my carb does not leak, however from only running for...60 seconds, i think i hear fuel in the bowl boiling?

I'm not getting ahead of myself here, just overstating some things hah. I'll go through the process of elimination again today and let you guys know whats up. If you can think of anything else for me to check in the meantime let me know

Re: First carb rebuild....fail

Houston, we have horsepower.

She ran for a solid 10 minutes with no problems, full power, GREAT vacc readout and didn't carbon up the plugs too much.

Here's the rundown, first i pulled all of the plugs, cleaned them and checked the wires. Then i pulled the cap, cleaned all the contacts and checked for any wear/oxidization.

Then i rechecked all sources of vacc, i unhooked the brake booster and plugged the line, i unhooked the PCV valve ONLY to test run, it's hooked back up now it had nothing to do with the problem.

I triple checked the fuel line, and fixed it so it doesn't leak.

I fired it up, and let it run for one minute then shut it down, pulled cylinder 1 plug, i have a picture, it barley had any black on it at all. At this point i reattached the PCV valve, fired it back up, and let it run for 10 minutes before i shut it down.

During the 10 minute period the engine obviously warmed up and the RPM elevated to 1300 while maintaining 19 inchs of vacc SOLID. the needle would fluctuate to 18 very rarely ,I'd say once a minute. I adjusted idle speed back down to 1100 RPM. continued to hold solid 19 inchs of vacc. I shut the engine down and fired it back up to test, absolutely NO hesitation, as soon as i turned the key it was alive.

I didn't bother checking fuel press, i don't think i need too at this point.

I did a CRANKING VACCUM TEST, i couldn't tell but it was either 7 or 8 inchs of vacc, steady needle with no fluctuation.

I checked the timing, still at 19 degrees.

There is only one problem now, when i throttle up the engine it's rough/ doesn't hesitate but pops occasionally. I think i can fix this when i tune the carb in.
😀 8)

**EDIT** I forgot to mention what i suspect was the problem lol, i think the brake booster is bad?

Re: First carb rebuild....fail

if it pops occasional it could be the wires you said have some dry rot on them and the spark is jumping, try separating the wires... or it could be arcing in the distributor cap

congrats on persevering to get it fixed.....and now you have to change the title of the thread...
