Well i'm cleaning up the wiring under the hood of my 85 442, and came across the two fusible links. Given there age, should i replace them, and are replacments available or do they usually last forever if there is no over current. Does anyone know what amp they melt at, my electrical service book does not give that information. I see Maxi fuse fuses and waterproof holders as a possible replacment, if so what amp do i need?

I'd say if they are still flexible you could let them in there. I've burnt one up in an older S-10 and just shortened to the burn.

NAPA sells replacements - not sure how to find out the amperage though...

You can't replace a fusible link with an inline fuse. They don't work the same and a fuse of the same amperage of a fusible link will pop while the fusible link may heat up if the draw is high but it won't fry unless there is a serious problem. The fusible link is normally 4 gauges smaller than the wire but if you are going to make them yourself you need to cover them with a non flammable thermal covering and you never use a fusible link inside the passenger compartment or trunk.
