Generational Accomplishments

Man you guys are sounding really OLD. And I AM old! When I was a kid in the 50's / 60's the grown-ups said I was a POS too. Twas always thus. If you want to really know what this younger generation is capable of then please speak to a soldier. Because they are out there busting *ss for us. I was in the Army during the last of the draftees. Ever since then the military has been Regular Volunteers. So if you did not serve it is because you chose not to. That means that from the late 70's/ 80's/ 90's/ 2k's and now all our military people have been VOLUNTEERS who chose to serve. That includes Millennials too. Any complaints about their military expertise? I didn't think so. I know this new generation is not what you want it to be. It never is. But I bet my life that if the sh*t hits the fan they will be there for us.

Video games and cell phones w/social media KILLED them being active. We can’t even hire any young people anymore, they don’t want to work that hard, and they CANT leave they’re phones alone.
Video games have been around since the early 70s, became mainstream in the mid 1980s when the Nintendo Entertainment System came out in 1985.
Game boy came out in 1989, kids have been distracted by games and pocket gadgets long before the present.

I know that I'd do a Time Bandits gig and buy 10 shares of Berkshire Hathaway back in the 1950s. Or 1000 shares of Apple in 1989. Or 200 Bitcoin in 2009.

Before that...it was hot rods. Oh. Whoops.

I have a 10 year old daughter, and you wouldn't believe how many of her friends want to be "YouTube stars". If that ain't a life goal, I don't know what is. I don't remember what I wanted to do at 10, but I can assure you it was a loftier goal than making videos and collecting followers/subscribers.

I was chatting with a recently-promoted Master Corporal from my unit yesterday who went out on his first exercise in-rank as a Section Commander. He was describing his experience of balancing his Battle Procedure versus the Privates pulling at his coat asking seemingly inane questions. I laughed and advised him it wasn't their fault for having a lack of experience, but it was his fault for being so approachable as that is what kids will always gravitate toward. No kid goes to bother the crusty old SNCO who needs to unload on the new guy just because. Granted both types of leader are required - but you aren't catching anything with salt and vinegar... other than French fries. Mmm... Freedom fries.

here’s the thing about that tho. If you actually want to make a living at it you’re gonna have to bust your *ss at it. Sure there’s a few outliers that get all the bucks without, but you’re going to be:
  • Having to come up with ideas all the time. New ones
  • Some form of planning before you shoot
  • Tech know how to run the gear
  • Doing “fixer” work if you need permits/permissions etc.
  • Lots of time recording
  • Lots of time editing
  • Dealing with users, comments, and YouTube’s shitty practices
  • And then doing all of this multiple times a week bc if you don’t produce it’s not going to happen

Don’t think for second the people that pull off “internet famous” do it by sitting around pointing a phone at themselves once a month. It’s a grind. I’ve got a lot of respect for those who are able to pull it off.

EDIT: and yeah a lot of them are dumbasses and dickheads, but it’s still a grind.
