Hope you have a safe and speedy recovery. A good MD makes all the difference on the surgery. About... 4-ish years back I had a physical, got referred to a urologist, and while he was prodding he asked if I knew/what I was doing about an umbelical hernia I had.
Whelp, ended up referred to a good surgeon, scheduled me a surgery right off, had to be beyond careful to avoid intestinal strangulation.
But some bed rest later for a while and I was back good as new. Good pain meds make all the difference. Take it easy and set yourself up BEFORE the surgery with things you can enjoy in bed - whatever you like, books, magazines, crosswords... get some movies together that someone can put in and change for you.
Take things slow after for a bit and you'll be fine. We all are gonna be waiting to hear you tell us the "all clear, things went great" message a few days after you go in.
Thats one I gotta disagree with these days... we had a run of bad luck over the last 18 months...
First been rear ended awaiting a turn while driving a 8 month old mustang by an illegal err I guess they call it "undocumented" individual with no license in an unregistered tahoe on 22s who was doing about 50 when he hit us...
Second was an untrained tow driver improperly securing a car and hooking on the wrong part of the car... which fell off the bed, rolled down the hill, and hit another truck while I was loose inside half in, legs hanging out of the car which was totalled of course after....
Third and most recently had some dumb irresponsible woman run a stop sign (must've been on a phone) and hit the other mustang on the side, throwing it sideways, insurance has paid over $15,000 on the damages in that one...
End of October 2016 to end of February 2018, went from perfect to having over a third of the discs in the spine herniated, bulging , nerve roots compressed or pinched, stenosis in 5 levels.... sciatica...
I had a nerve die in my jaw before from a broken tooth getting a post/crown that over time killed the nerve. I'd trade the spine/disc/nerve pain in a minut to get that dental pain back instead, believe you me
Paralytic Bowel is what you'll have to worry about after the surgery, so avoid foods that can cause gas. Other advice, if your guts pop out again, lay down stretch out and push them back in, relax afew minutes an away ya go again.
I went threw this at 45 after bulldogging a cow, (long story) ended up with a grapefruit size embelical hernia.
You maybe older than l was, an at the time l was in good shape, but l was up and moving around in 3 days and back to work in 2 weeks, an l only had pain killers the first day home, I couldn't function on them.
So take it easy and hope for the best!!!

I popped an inguinal hernia in boy scouts while rolling boulders off a huge rock face. I got it fixed when I was 25. I took 2 of the 100 pain pills I was prescribed, I'd rather hurt than take them. I was shuffling around after a couple days and felt decent after a week. You'll figure out how to move without using abdominal muscles!!
Mine blew in my early 40s. Chalk it up to an old injury that created a weak spot on the abdominal wall. Sounded like stepping on a ketchup packet when I did it.
The good news is that you stayed out of the garage once the goooooood drugs kicked in. My wife just about smacked me and hauled me in from the garage two days after my surgery, and sentenced me to Motrin.
Percocet and Vicodin are bad juju unless your really, really need them.

Pain pills scare the hell out of me. I'm sober 38 years TODAY and I've never taken them more than one day after any surgery.
