I'm all about it, but the thought of the vinyl covered rear section makes me sick. It just screams "I'm going to cause severe rust."

Part of the reason for that was the big three all did poorer body work on vinyl top cars. Hard tops used body lead to fill the roof seams, while for vinyl top cars, the factories used filler putty on the roof seams as the vinyl would hide the sloppier body work. The putty filler usually dries out, cracks, and lets in and traps moisture against the roof weld seams. Welds tend to rust faster than the base metal.
