So i took out my alternator to paint it and when I put it back on the motor I crewed the wire that runs to the starter to the negative part of the alternator causing it to short out.. smoke came out of my starter. would i just be able to replace the starter solenoids or do i have to get the whole starter rebuilt and did i also short anything else? I have a Powermaster starter

Assuming you tried it in the car with no results, pull the starter and bench test it. Remove the solenoid, ground the starter and apply power to the positive lead (where you unbolted the solenoid from) if she spins, then the solenoid is fried, if not time for a new starter. Good Luck!
