Oh yeah, he bleeds gear oil too. He is actually a veteran diesel mechanic...been at the same place for 45 years! He is the one responsible for my love of wrenching!!!! My younger brother and i were helping do engine swaps at 9 or 10 years old.

He is really big into vintage and unlimited hydroplane boat racing....his dad got him into that when he was a youngster.

The crazy part....my mom used to drag race a 69 chevelle ss 396 competitively in the late '60s!!! She still has her fire jacket.
Wow!! Scott, I'm impressed.
So it does run in the family...that's awesome...and your mom being a veteran drag racer....that's so cool. I could see how they help support your addition.
How was your dad involved in unlimited hydroplane and vintage racing? Do you have any pics? I was also a lover of stock outboard racing when I was young. It got to the point where I couldn't afford the hobby anymore, so boats, engines, and gear were sold off.
I wish I still had it all still.

Jack, he never owned any boats as raising 5 kids took alot of $$$. But he has always volunteered at any race he can get to. He is an APBA member, and just last weekend was at the Madison Regatta which is only an hour from here. Just recently, he was approached by an old friend to buy the original Pac n Pay vintage hydro that was just restored! Unfortunately he doesn't have $100k sitting around or it would be his!!!!

He sent me this pic last week....

Thanks for posting that pic,Scott.
That is one cool boat. Yeah, unlimited hydros get into big bucks. From my recollection, they used aircraft engines like Allisons...stuff like that. They are quite fast, too. I've never them in action...live, that is. I have watched them on TV and love the rooster tail they shoot out.
It is an expensive hobby, no doubt. You're either well sponsored, or loaded to be able to compete.

We had a member awhile back that was into drag racing boats. He had a nice rig and worked on customers race boats as well. He was an excellent fabricator and also had a shop doing custom work on cars, too.

For sure!!! The majority of them use lycoming turbine engines out of helicopters and such. There are a few that still run V12 allison's....those sound friggin awesome!!!!
He is more into the vintage 7.0L Grand Prix boats that are made of wood, and sport alcohol blown big blocks and hemi's!!!! I grew up at the boat races...absolutely love it! The 5.0L class is a blast too....bunch of mini hydros running on small blocks, or even the smaller ones with 4 bangers lol!

Here are a couple more he just sent me Jack. These boats are like drag cars on the water!!!!

Scott,
Thanks for sharing the pics of the hydros. I love wooden boats. I'm sure they sound out of this world when they're they're out there running. I used to enjoy watching the alcohol running outboards. They had a sound of their own....and fast.
I also liked going to the vintage boat shows. There was a few old inboard hydros, crackerboxes, etc....cool stuff. I like the small 4-banger powered hydros...I think one of classes was 44 cu in which ran Crosley engines, which were also popular in small sprint cars.
