Re: Headlights, interior lights, key buzzer, stereo not work

My buzzer was working great up until this happened so I think everything with the buzzer is fine.

I was checking my wires down at the starter and notice two things, first thing, one of the red wires coming off the big terminal of the starter that goes back into the dash, I noticed that right after where the wire goes into the fusible link and comes out as 2 wires that one of the 2 wires looks like it has been cut, its just the little nub sticking out. Other than that the wires around the starter look fine if not just dirty and old.

Second, I noticed a green, if I recall correctly, think wire off on its own by the exhaust at the back of the engine. It looks like its been sitting on the exhaust and has completely melted, this wire appears to go up into the dash behind the distributor, could this have something to do with it?

Either way I've got an appointment with my mechanic at 9 saturday, I just re-did all my main battery terminal wires etc so it probably cant hurt to just get my grounds and all the little associated wires done too. My mechanic is an older guy who is indenpendant so I'm sure he shouldn't have a problem figuring this out. Also, I don't think its the switch its self because like I said earlier, I can get the headlights to flash when I turn my alarm on and off by turning the switch on when I enable the alarm, and I can get the highbeams to do the same by turning my highbeam switch on. I think its just faulty wires coming off the starter, as far as I understand from reading things here, the wires that come off the starter are the ones that control the headlights and that sort of thing?

Also on the day that his happened when I was trying to start the car after sitting all night right before this happened the starter just kept spinning freely, sometimes it will do this once or twice when its cold, but yesterday it did this a good 6-7 times before starting, and did the same when trying to start it after going to the bank thats less than a 5 minute drive from my house, could this be related?

Re: Headlights, interior lights, key buzzer, stereo not work

Just noticed another small thing, the wires that come off the big terminal on the starter, they go into this little metal tube thing, this metal tube has an arm on one side of it with what looks to be a bolt hole. This appears to be some kind of mount or ground and its undone, I imagine this also has something to do with it?

The more I look at the wires around the starter area the more I think this is the culprit. I could also hear a slight thunking noise when backing out of my driveway and swinging the cars front end to the right sometimes, so I think that might have been the culprit.

Everything around the starter looks very oily and old and worn, and I also hydroplaned pretty bad in the the night before this happened. Just on the front passengers side tire. It looked lke most of the water went outside the car but I'm not really sure. But everything worked fine for the rest of the night after doing that, it wasnt until starting my car the next morning that i had problems, so I'm beginning to think the wiring that comes off the starter and goes up into the dash to power my headlights and interior accessories is just bad. Is there any other wiring that handles that stuff or is the line off the starter the main wire?

Re: Headlights, interior lights, key buzzer, stereo not work

Try replacing the headlight switch all that runs thru that switch look under the steering wheel for fuses on wire single fuses and relays .one more thing that some pics

Re: Headlights, interior lights, key buzzer, stereo not work

seems your right your main power wire from battery down to starter and out up to car harness is arching somewhere.. plus the oil isnt helping... starter is going bad too from age or oil clean all that off and see how that works ..a starter isnt that bad of a cost anyway

Re: Headlights, interior lights, key buzzer, stereo not work

sure isn't sounding like this was all caused by a radio installation that your dad did...

Re: Headlights, interior lights, key buzzer, stereo not work

my buzzer is very low is there a way to turn it up?

Re: Headlights, interior lights, key buzzer, stereo not work

if it were me, I'de start checking everything with a multimeter
put the + lead on a known hot wire, and go around with the black lead checking all the ground points. Should show voltage on the meter on when hitting all the grounds. If not, if its a chassis ground, and you're not getting anything, there is a prob there.
If that don't show anything, get a schematic/diagram of the car, and start checking all circuits in all the different ignition settings (off/acc/on), for anything out of whack.
