LS swap!

I hear they're cheap and just fall right into every car ever produced. I saw it on the internet, it has to be true!

What could go wrong?

Nah. Olds 260. Slower than all get out but reliable as heck.

Either a poncho 301 for rod twisting fun but a quick install, or, if you're gonna go slow with a olds 307 just go 260 instead. But I guess point taken. We could toss the 265 in the mix.

TBH I've never had good luck with 307s, but I know the 260s supposedly were a bulletproof little snail mill if you listen to the guys who like em. I'd feel somewhat comfortable believing them that you can drop one in and it just keeps running.

Hmm.... thinking about it, how about an edit...

Anyone wanna see him drop in an early carb iron duke?
I saw very few 260's in service. The one I inherited in my 70S was on it's way out. I got 450,000 km out of a 81 5A headed 307. The First Nations drove the big Olds and Buicks into the ground here, Olds 307 powered. They bought them well used and did 0, I repeat 0, oil changes. When their vehicles needed motors, we would have to jam a screwdriver in the hole and let the tar seep out. The 307's were tough and reliable with average power for the early, mid 80's.

Hear ya about the pain med night; that was pretty much the sum and substance of my entire weekend. Iron Duke , eh? Okay, one step beyond the basic twilight zone of motor eccentricity, TURBO IT! E-Bay is your friend; buy a cheap Chinese made turbo for under a 100 bucks and go nuts. Think there might even be a video or two of someone doing exactly that.

The 307 (301 and 305) engines are all ultra thin wall constructed. They are poor engine choices for any application where you want a modicum of power.

I know nothing about the 307 but that isn't true of either the 301 or 305

The 301 Turbo block is quite robust with thicker main webs than the early non Turbo block. The 307 Olds actually has quite thick cylinders but does have the windowed main webs all 1977 and later Olds gas V8's have. Who cares about a sbc 305🙃.
