Well i got the starter in and all shimmed up. I went to crank and the battery died good news is it almost fired up. The teeth on the gear were worn away. I am getting a new battery tonight. gbodyvet would needing an oil change and being a little low on oil also be a problem? I am doing an oil change tomorrow. Plugs are fine and oil looks great no gas or watery look in it. I wonder if changing to a higher oil will help? I am running 10w30 full synthenic in it now. Any info would be great! I have thought about replacing the carb but with emissions i am left with just a cc carb. I like cc carbs but electronic stuff always is a pain in the *ss. hey gbodyvet my plugs were a little wet before the car died so i changed them and it ran fine afterwards. Thanks for all the replies.
Matt

Needing an oil change won't affect it starting but fresh oil is always good!. Your plugs shouldn't be wet though. A normal burning plug should be a tan to light brownish color. Reading your plugs can tell you a lot about the condition of your engine and ignition too. Like Bill said, make sure they're gapped correctly and that you're using the right heat range (just get the plug made for the car). I prefer A/C Delco plugs in my cars. Here's a chart to give you a hand if you need it.

One mistake many have made is that they upgrade the distributor to an HEI and forget to upgrade the plugs. HEI plugs have a much larger gap and more resistance. Using standard plugs with smaller gaps on an HEI set up can result in the plugs overheating and that can result in pre-ignition.....

yeah i have seen that happen before. The engine is all stock and came with a cc carb and dizzy. I just went with the acdelcos and gapped them to what the sticker said. Only problem I have now is the passenger side plugs are covered in gas looks like i need to adjust the carb.

Well the monte is up and running again. My question is when i put it in drive it idles really rough. I have the idle mixture screws out 3 1/2 turns. Before I go and hook up the dwell could it just be the iab or are the rich and lean stop screws off by a bit? Thanks for everyones help again. with out you guys it would probly not be running.
