it just cranks it doesn't fire up at all. Weird thing is before this it ran fine. I put a new o2 sensor in and it started up but was smoking white really bad and running rich. I shut it off and it wouldn't start back up now i can't get it to start at all.

Yeah first thing I was worried about head gasket being bad. I just had my brother tried to start it for me sounds like the starter is not catching or something plus it runs after key is off. I feel like a jackass now. I am sure that is the cause. Well lesson learned and a crap load of money spent. I didn't even think about that til now when i heard it. Thanks for everyones help I will update in a bit.

Let's back up a little and think about this.

1. Before you changed the O2 sensor, the car ran fine correct?
2. After changing it, the white smoke and running rich began right?
3. At some point you had changed the plugs, was this before or after the car quit running?
4. Afterwards, it would crank but no fire (are the plugs wet?).
5. Now it acts like it won't crank right?

If everything I just listed is correct, the problem isn't the starter. Either your battery is low from all of the cranking or something is trying to hydrolock your cylinders (which would prevent the engine from spinning). If hydrolock is the case, something has caused your plugs to get wet in the process and started filling the cylinders.

It's a shot in the dark but what are the chances of your carb taking a dump? Does your oil smell like fuel and appear really watery?

I've also seen this happen with engines that have been WAAAY overfilled with oil. I bought a Malibu back in the day for $400 because the owner thought it had a bad head gasket. Seemed odd because it had a Goodwrench 305 in it. Turned out to have 3 gallons of oil in the engine. Changed the oil and the car ran great.

Just a few more possibilities to consider if you don't find a remedy anytime soon.

Well i got the starter in and all shimmed up. I went to crank and the battery died good news is it almost fired up. The teeth on the gear were worn away. I am getting a new battery tonight. gbodyvet would needing an oil change and being a little low on oil also be a problem? I am doing an oil change tomorrow. Plugs are fine and oil looks great no gas or watery look in it. I wonder if changing to a higher oil will help? I am running 10w30 full synthenic in it now. Any info would be great! I have thought about replacing the carb but with emissions i am left with just a cc carb. I like cc carbs but electronic stuff always is a pain in the *ss. hey gbodyvet my plugs were a little wet before the car died so i changed them and it ran fine afterwards. Thanks for all the replies.

gotta give you credit for not giving up and keeping cool..I hope it fires up with the batter charged and you might as well do an oil change so you won't have to crawl under the car for a while

Just a thought....if you are running an HEI distributor, make sure your plugs are correct and gapped wide enough. And your timing should be advanced at least 10 degrees too. I had the wrong plugs in my motor at first and it would run, but barely. Put better plugs in it and it ran great, fired on one bump of the starter. Hope this helps...good luck!
