Stock rear would be a 7.5" Engine could be a Chevy 305, Olds 260,Olds 307 or Olds diesel 350. If you still have the frame pads in the car, the pads close to the firewall would be an olds , close to the rad support would be a chevy.

it woulda came with a 260 olds or 231 buick most likely. if your vin has an "a" its the 231. could've had a 267 or 305 chevy, but not near as likely...307 was not offered in a cutlass in 79.

No need to speculate on what engine was in your car. Just type in your VIN and it will tell you; http://apps.oldsgmail.com/vin.asp

As for what gears you have in the rear, just look up the RPO code from your decklid sticker and look here; http://apps.oldsgmail.com/rpolookup.asp

Whatever engine or gears came in your car stock, there's one thing for certain; they sucked!
