I am thinking of giving the Malibu a body job this summer and I want to know what some of you guys have spent on paint jobs and rust removal.

I have a small hole in the passenger rocker. And what appears to be surface rust on the doors and trunk. Looking to paint the car black gloss with a maroon or cherry red speck. Or stick to flat balck

Re: How Much for a decent paint job?

Depends on if you are doing the work yourself or having someone else do the work. You could spend anywhere from $500 to $7000+ depending on what bodywork needs to be done and paint is chosen and where you take it too. If you are having someone else do the work you will be paying quite a bit if you want it done right as black shows every minor flaw in the bodywork and requires lots of blocking to make sure its perfect. If your doing the work yourself I would look around at paint and material prices to get an idea of what it will cost but that varies greatly depending on what paint brand you go with. If your not going to do it yourself than look around at multiple shops and get lots of estimates and see what kind of paints they use. When I went to school for auto body the paint jobs we did were around $1800-$2500 for PPG paint and that was with free labor.

PPG and Shopline are worlds apart from one another. Shop line is PPG's sub brand. IT used to be called omni. Ive worked with shop line, omni, a PPG and most likely will neither use anything but the good ol ppg from here on out. there seem to be alot more inconsistencies in the shop line.

Remember the old saying "you get what you pay for"? Well I think this quote was generated in the paint booth lol. If you think wow, I'm getting a good deal then your proally not. Spend the extra money to be sure your getting a good paint job. Body work looks like sh*t so will the car. Just my 2 cents.

Re: How Much for a decent paint job?

have my cutlass in the shop right now.. i bought new hood and doors so i have no rust.. theres a few spots on the body that need work. his esitmate was $2300 for grey cuz u dont see that many inperfections or $2500 for burgundy.. since they still working on body i plan on just doing a 2 tone silver to smoke grey paint job im guessing it will be a few hundred more for that..

Last year we repainted our El Camino , Most of the good paint shops here have switched to water based paints.
My El Camino is looking real good these days , With a coat of PPG Envirobase Waterborne ,"Guards Red " off a 87 Porsche.
It wasn't cheap but it looks like glass. Also used the water based clear coat. $4000

When I was in school they had the guys from PPG come in and do a demonstration of the waterborne paint and had us spray some and believe me when I tell you that it is some of the nicest paint I have ever sprayed. I have a SATAjet 3000 hlvp that I use to paint and clear which does a really good job but with the waterborne it was as close to glass as you can get. Didn't even need to wet sand any orange peel, just a little buffing and it was done. Very nice paint. Good looking elky too!

Also it only requires like one and a half coats for coverage instead of two, hence why a lot of shops are switching to it. Plus it's way better for the environment.

Re: How Much for a decent paint job?

Plan to spend 3-5K for a decent paint job. Rust repair will be a pretty big variable too. My brother is a body guy and does quite a bit of side work at my home shop. Mostly just bumpers, fenders, doors and such. No heavy hits. He's done a few complete repaints here too. At this point he won't consider it unless the customer has $5,000 in hand. There's a lot of work involved in doing one right. The guys on TV have an unlimited budget and an editing room to make it look really fast and easy. There's a lot of labor hours in the tear down and final assembly. If you can do all that yourself you'll save a ton.
