Look at the build sticker on the underside of the trunk lid....if its still there it will look similar to this. The build codes are alphabetized.

The stock shaft has a crappy rag joint that wears out over time. The jeep or astro van shaft has u joints on both ends. This makes the shaft much stronger, tightens up the feel of the wheel, etc as I've been told. I have an astro shaft, just not installed yet.

To be clear the article refers to the Grand Cherokee. Is it the same box for the plain old Cherokee or is the box only found in the Grand Cherokee trim?

I don't get it. The author of the article admits the '85 - '88 MCSS box is the one to get but is getting rare, then goes into all this yada yada about getting a junkyard box and having Lee Manufacturing rebuild it for $225 to $250. Rock Auto has MCSS quick ratio boxes for a lot less than that and no hassles. What am I missing?

Cheers - Gary

TURNA, you have a cynical attitude about what you read in for-profit media. I think you've got the right idea.

There are dozens of articles on this subject on this forum, with no way for a member doing research to discern which to believe. This is the main reason I'm inclined to go with a reputable retailer like Rock Auto, with a reputation to protect and a published returns policy, let alone the opportunity of disputing the transaction with your credit card company and getting them to join in the fray. Not to mention not having to get your hands dirty getting hold of the lump.

Anybody have an idea how to clear up the fog? I'd like to see any postings identifying a 12.7:1 box include pictures with all identifying marks and features clearly visible along with a notarized affidavit stating number of turns lock to lock in the vehicle under normal driving conditions. Just kidding about that last part.

Any other ideas?

Cheers - Gary
