So then the question becomes. If I'm ditching the 305 and it's associated emissions and computer related items. Why not just go lsx with a 6.0 from a truck and either a 4l60 or 4l80

Much more cost.

Not in the same league of swap. The emissions and computer you have now are the beginning of smog and barley do anything other than limit any future potential. Just swapping to a good distributor and non-computer controlled carb would make gains with your current engine. Moving up in displacement along with the better distributor and carb would be better. Either option will be cheaper than going to an LS swap and going fuel injected or even adding all the parts needed to go carbuera

You could slap a carb'd 4.8/5.3L in there for not much expense and be ahead of the game. It would make plenty of power through the stock manifolds with a performance "truck" cam.

But, it'll just snowball on you... 😉

this is just a hypothetical build

If I'm going to ditch obd1 then I'm going to go all out. If I'm going out then I'm going with a good running 5.3/4l60 combo

I am at a crossroads honestly.

I suppose I should keep it simple at toss on new valve seals

I have an 84 Camino with a 305. I had the CCC carb and replaced it with a Holly 600.I don't know about the 87 Camino but my 84 didn't have a full computer setup. Just the carb. I kept the wiring, just rolled up what I didn't need and tucked it up out of the way. Mine ran great on the 600 till the motor froze one night and the block cracked. I'm going back with a stroker because I already have all the parts otherwise I would be shopping base crate motors that I could build over time.

I have to disagree about the low end crate 350 not being any better than a 305. I just found several crate motors for under $2,000 that would make good starting points for future performance. Some of them are one piece rear main seal, some are 4 bolt main. Some have roller blocks. Depends on where you look. These are all new motors, not refurbs.

You don't have to ditch the computer system or emissions, they will function quite well on a 350 and larger. Some guys have gotten the CCC system to operate on big blocks. The CCC system doesn't care about CID. Also the CCC system can feed up to 500 HP. Remember the E4ME Qjet is a 750 CFM casting. If you don't know what you are doing, deleting the emissions can reduce power and MPGs. Purchase Doug Roe's Qjet book and read it. The computer carb and dist do not really limit power, many people just can't be bothered to understand how to work with it. Just get a 87-88 ECM and put a ZZ4 PROM chip in it.

I have the 87 ecm
Where can I get the zz4 prom. I'm pretty sure timing tables will be different

I'm not worried so much about the ccc as I would be about the ecm. I'm sure there is going to be a limit on camshaft profile. I'm just not familiar with the ecm enough to say what that would be
