So what do I need to look for to find out what exactly this LS engine came from that is transplanted in my 86' Monte
It appears to be a truck engine.

D585 coils, earlier PCM, hmm... what are the 3 digits on the heads (PS front)?

doesn't look to have been modified. with that being said, check the head numbers as mentioned above. this should get you close.
the displacement is cast into the back of the block. 4.8l and 5.3l engines shared the same block, different stokes. iirc, 4.8l pistons were flat and 5.3l pistons were dished. a bore scope camera, or a sharp eye will help you here.
6.0l engines had their own blocks.

it looks like a vortec to me, the LS doesn't sit so high and the serpentine set up is the same as I have on my SBC. As far as I know that serpentine set up does not fit on an LS engine

I don't know what the differences are between the 2 but the plastic cover says Vortec and the oil pan has this number on it.I don't see any numbers on the heads near the power steering.

In the description "OEM 99-02 Silverado Sierra Tahoe Yukon Vortec Engine Cover V8 Assembly. ". I think he stuck the LSX for more hits and if you had an LSX you'd know it..
