Peaked my interests. Possiblities of a cheaper likely posi'd 8.5" source complete with disc brakes. What is the difference in widths New S-series versus G-body? The welding shouldn't be that big an issue .... people fab 12 bolts and 9s to fit all the time. Not to mention snagging the front brakes for an upgrade too.

The difference there is the 12 bolts have the ears for the upper control arms on the center section (assuming they came out of an A-body car), and the 9" has a steel housing which is easy to weld on. Trying to weld ears on a cast iron center section would be quite difficult if you expect it to hold.

am I wrong? A-body upper ears are at the wrong angle and either the A-arms are persuaded to fit (or in the case of aftermarket rears - repositioned correctly). I thought the 98 up housing were aluminum.

Many companies make control arms to swap the earlier A body rear into a G body, (no ear relocation), spring perches may have to be moved, but no big deal the axle tubes are steel. I think you may be thinking of the aluminum dana 44's they tried in 98 or so jeep grand cherokees, they were junk....GM still has a cast iron 8.625 case (modern 8.5).

ok, simple question. whats a easy posi swap? NON-RACING application.

Any g-body that came with a posi (RPO Code G80), will be the easiest thing to replace your open with, 7.5 is direct swap, 8.5 requires a shorter driveshaft, if gear ratio is different than your current, you'll need new speedo gears.

ok. thought so.

an s-10 rear end is 48" and a G body is 52.25" so how is that going to work?

well that is why I asked 2 1/16" aint happenning without a mini-tub .... back to the drawing board.

if you wanna do a posi and gear up grade then just gut an s-10 diff and put the componets in your g body housing. axles will work if you get a 26 spline rear end.I will be doing a swap in my 80 soon. i'll take pictures step by step if i can and post it. axle is out of a 88 blazer 3:42 posi. i mostly have first gen style truck 82-94. i will sell parts. But so you guys know i'm in Manitoba Canada so there will be cross boarder fee's and shipping ?

That 88 just might be 28 spline. Can't remember for sure if 88 or 89 was the first year for 28 splines.
