Must be metric then, 'cause the old saw says, "Righty-tighty; lefty-loosey" and turning the first gear clockwise is turning it in a right hand rotation. and that doesn't open things like nuts or lids on jars, it closes them. I guess it is all those unnecessary intermediate gears that are b*gg*er ing up the works.
