Got back home from New York late last night. Funeral is over, it was a long
busy weekend. I didn't drive and I-80 isn't exactly scenic so I spent the ride home browsing searchtempest for any good G Body parts. There is some decent stuff but it's all too far away and too big to ship. Anyways I'm home just in time for the white stuff to start flying.
Today I sold the TH350 that came with my Buick 350, and for a few reasons. Mainly because I don't need it just yet and with everything being apart space in the garage is at a premium. Plus TH350s (even the BOP ones) are a dime a dozen on Craigslist. I can always pick one up later if I decide to go that route. And honestly I don't think I will go that route, I'm leaning towards the easy way out and getting a TCI unit from Summit.
Now that it's cold in the garage and I've procrastinated this long on a heater, I just decided to pick up a propane torpedo heater. It's not the greatest setup but it's not permanent and it should be enough to get me through the winter. It puts out a lot of heat and the fumes aren't overbearing. And it shouldn't be an issue but I already have a carbon monoxide detector in the garage.
With the heater set up in the garage, I proceeded to my next step on the car today. I jacked up the back side and pulled the wheels. I have to make a spot for those in the shed somewhere.
I then spent a few minutes underneath just taking it all in. I got my work cut out, no doubt. Even though my fuel lines are not that old, I just am not happy with them. The bends aren't very neat and there's actually a couple kinks in the lines from where the body got set on top of them. Oops. Also there is still gas in the tank from ~4 years ago. Oops yet again.
So after I got it lifted up and the wheels off and took it all in, I started pulling the old lines. I've currently got them 80% removed except there are 3 hangers on the cross member above the rear axle and there isn't enough clearance between the body and the frame to remove them. I
really don't want to lift up the body, like
really don't want to go there. But I may have to, if only a few inches.
I also removed the old emergency brake lines as they are in awful shape.
For the new lines, I don't know if I should try to fab up/buy nicer hard lines, or just say **** it and go braided stainless the whole *ss way.
Next I'm gonna have to drop the tank and get the old gas out of it. The tank and sending unit are new so they should still be fine once emptied out.
I'll get that done and we'll go from there. Obviousky I have some painting to do underneath and I'm not sure what I want to use for it, I know I want to finish it in Gravitex, but I need to do some wire wheeling and grinding then use some sort of rust stop paint. I previously painted Eastwood rust converter on everything then topcoated with brush-on black Rustoleum. The Rustoleum still looks fine but the Eastwood sh*t was garbage. It's peeling off like dried Elmer's glue in spots.
Also I'm not real comfortable with how wobbly the car is on the jack stands. It is making solid contact on all of the stands, but the stands themselves can move a little. I don't think it's gonna fall off, but I'm not thrilled with it either. I did move the rear jack stands to underneath the axle itself after I took this picture-
