Re: Khan's Motoring Chronicles

yeah, I didn't know where to get distilled water. So I used some coolant in the water to keep rusting a minimum in the event it leaked

Re: Khan's Motoring Chronicles

khan, you can buy distilled water at canadian tire

Re: Khan's Motoring Chronicles

I just learned about this from my machinist. If your crank rear seal journal has seal surface pitting, or grooving, like the front does, fel-pro has an offset RMS. BS 11829-1 / SBC PN of course. A cam lock plate is a must. I've examined that failure. 8)

had some bungs welded into my headers and repainted them

got new gaskets and put the top end back together. Sealed the waterpump more thoroughly. And used the Edelbrock gasgacinch on the intake gasket water holes this time, not the rtv. Cleaned and re'used the head gaskets. Put the system to 15psi this time, at the cap's rating, and left it over night

next day, found water in the cylinders again. So heads and intake are back off... I'm very puzzled. I've talked to my machinist and I'm re-measuring everything. So far I've measured a fairly flat deck, variances of 0.0015" max on driver side, and 0.0025" max on passenger side. I placed the heads bare on the block to see if they seat properly, check for any rocking or uneven placement, check if I can see light thru between them.

Everything looks fine so far. I'll be checking head surface variances tomorrow.

I don't know enough to understand what's happening. And I can't find anyone else that does this pressure test. I've talked to machinist and we walked thru some Q&A to see if I've done anything wrong. He says he's never done this test before running an engine, only after. So gasket might seal better after a run?

Is this test valid for this engine? How much coolant pressure does the system see during operation? Machinist says to try compression test instead. I'm torquing head bolts to 65psi with thread sealer, following the correct circular pattern. Should I try 70psi? or will that distort the aluminum heads?

... any other ideas?

Re: Khan's Motoring Chronicles

At work every engine we run. We have a vacuum fill gauge to fill the cooling system and fill it. http://www.amazon.com/UView-550000-Airl ... 805&sr=8-1

You put the adapter in the radiator and hook it up to shop air. I pulls a vacuum in the whole cooling system. When it stop pulling vacuum which is typically around 20-25in Hg. If that gauge moves even the slightest bit then there is a leak. It will find even the slightest leak. Ive seen it pick up a loose pipe plug. Its works very well.

I know it doesnt solve your problem or anything just hope you can use that info in some way.

Re: Khan's Motoring Chronicles

Rtv needed on waterports on intake gasket.

Wouldnt have leaked into your cylinders though if this was a problem.

Re: Khan's Motoring Chronicles

well, it's been a while since I've posted... it's just been very frustrating.

I pulled the intake and heads back off, got new intake gaskets AGAIN, reused the head gaskets again, and put it back together.

I didn't bother with a coolant pressure test this time. We hooked it up to run on the stand

It fired on the first few cranks and even had decent timing right off the go. We ran it on the stand for about 10-15 minutes to check for leaks. It ran pretty well but thought I saw oil coming from the base of the heads.

I wasn't sure if this coming from the exhaust ports, as this can be expected before the rings seat in the cylinders. I came back the next day, cleaned it all up, and ran it again to check for leaks.

here's some video

DB Electrical http://www.dbelectrical.com/p-1319-new- ... 031-l.aspx

it's a high torque mini starter. It's not a high quality piece, it's made in China, but it fit my budget and gave me a chance to replace my big factory starter. It works well, gives more fitment space with the headers. I like it...
