machinist called me today, said he has no idea how the old seals survived.

Probably something Mac did and doesnt remember..... He was um.... resourceful.

Re: Khan's Motoring Chronicles

Pontiac455, thanks for the encouraging words. Hopefully after the re-re-seals, it won't cause other problems. This motor has fought me at every step.

JBreu, can't wait to get this going. Was hoping for mid 12s this summer with the converter, gears, and new slicks. But this motor has blown the budget for slicks, and taken up the time for the gears. But I still hope to see high 12s
... maybe I'll crack 12.5s next summer after some gears and slicks

Online, too bad I threw out the old seals... I'm wondering if something special was done to them to make them work

Re: Khan's Motoring Chronicles

no, not running yet... machinist still has motor, said he's got the seal situation figured out. When I get it back, I'll do one more run on the stand for last minute checkup. Then put it in the car and go!

so, we have NO clue how the old ones worked. There is absolutely no clearance for these. I have a 0.495" lift cam, and there is only 0.507" between the shoulder of the valve guide and spring retainer.
We never checked because the old ones were on there fine, and we figured why re-invent the wheel?

The intake side is fine

So because I'm frustrated and this has taken up all my budget, I'm not pulling the heads back off to mill down the guides. We're just gonna run the exhaust side with 70's style O-ring seals. Won't be as nice as these fuel injection positive seals, but it'll work.

Re: Khan's Motoring Chronicles

What if you throw some umbrella seals on there? I'm using just umbrellas, oil control has been o-k. not great, but those old worn cast iron valve guides can use a little extra lubrication, i say 😀

Re: Khan's Motoring Chronicles

Does anyone know how Khan got along this time around? Good I hope/

Re: Khan's Motoring Chronicles
