Re: Khan's Motoring Chronicles

Pontiac455, read my previous post, that's what we've done with the seals. No progress on the motor since.

Othtim, no room for umbrella seals either. I'll just have to deal with a little oil burning at start-up.

my rad got busted, it's a long story. But I've got a new one ordered and on it's way. I don't have time to run the motor again, so I went over tonight to get the engine ready. I used a magnet draining the oil to see if my oil is clean, no metal. It looked pretty good. I hooked up the transmission and just got home.

maybe try installing the engine tomorrow...

Re: Khan's Motoring Chronicles

Khan, by looking back at some photos of yer heads, u have the oil sheilds on all valves so u wont need the positive or umbrella seals. The O-ring seals will do just fine. THe heads that don't have oil sheilds under the rotators and retainers need the positive seals, all the older gm's had the o ring seals frrom the factory. I wouldn't go without them the carbon will build up and do nasty things. If it builds up enuff and a vlave starts to leak a bit it will burn up.

Re: Khan's Motoring Chronicles

Pontiac455,
you're exactly right.

these heads are 89 TPI heads, they originally came with O-ring AND positive seals. However, port work and larger valves leave no more provision for the positive seal.

when I took the engine apart, there were both O-ring AND positives on there. But we have no idea how the positives were working; there's no room for them

so what we have done now, is keep the O-ring seals, and gotten rid of the positives; but only on the exhaust. The intake side works fine with both seals.

So now I only have O-rings, the engine will have sealing characteristics of a 70s engine. It's not the greatest, but it'll have to do.

Re: Khan's Motoring Chronicles

lots of progress in the last week. Engine is in car, almost all hooked up, ready to drive out. Just a few small things to figure out. I've been so busy, haven't been taking pictures

but my new rad came in the other day, and got it installed the same night. It was a little tricky, but it's in and hooked up.

it just barely fits in the core supports, scrapes in there. Cut up my old rad rubber supports to perch this one up. And the top support is sorta just forced on there. The fans line up pretty good too, only a little bit of cutting to clear the steering box.

Re: Khan's Motoring Chronicles

update:
got a chance to work on the engine a little on Saturday. Had to figure out some new parts, some wiring, and make sure everything was hooked up correctly. Had some timing and carb problems, but got the engine running in the car. Nothing blew up or caught fire.

got a couple hours last night. Got my trans oil cooler on (it's jery-rigged until I can find proper fittings for the in-rad one), figured out wiring for the fans, topped up the fluids, etc...
and drove the car out of the garage under it's own power!

... finally...

gonna try and go tonight, get the hood on, and drive it up a road or something. I need to renew my plates, or get a temp permit, and get insurance.

there's a few things just half-assed in right now that'll need to be sorted out quickly
... like the temperature gauge I broke. I just have a temporary one fed thru sitting on my dash
... and the trans cooler is zip tied infront of the rad in the core support
... gotta readjust the carb and timing too. Probably some wiring too

But now that I'm mobile, I can hopefully get this done quicker after bringing the car home.

I think I can only get in a month of driving, unfortunately, before it's too cold. Then it goes back in for storage. :blam:

Does anyone know how Khan got along this time around? Good I hope/

So he's not fully satisfied with how its running.......BUT;

We drove 3.5 hours 1 way to race at one of the few tracks left open for the season. Ran it hard. Collected the quickest AND fastest Timeslip for this car EVER (including the previous owner's times), and drove back 3.5 hours.

I think you call that Good!

Ill let Khan fill you guys in on the specifics if he chooses.

that sounds good....and the times should be faster at this time of the year with the cooler air as long as you can get the tires to hook up on the cold asphault

Re: Khan's Motoring Chronicles

yeah, as my brother posted...
I'm still a little paranoid about the motor. I don't think it's running just right yet, still needs some tweeking and troubleshoot some bugs. But I have been driving it around and sorting out little things as I go.

we been trying to hit the track for a while, but there was weather delays and the trailer was out of order... long story...

but we finally made it out! Our local track was closed in September; but that's all well cuz it sucks anyways. So we made the drive out to Napierville Dragway, a bit outside Montreal, about 3.5 hours from our place.

I drove the GP, with equipment, and passengers. Raced it. And drove back.

we were short on time, but I made 6 or 7 runs, ran it pretty hard

here's some action shots:

my very first 12sec pass

that's a tire off the ground! 8)
never done that before

here's a launching shot. With better traction, I was actually pulling that front tire up

I've never done quicker than 2.0sec 60ft before this

Also it wasnt that cold. It was supposed to be about 15*C, but warmed up to about 22-24*C, which is a comfortable breezy summer day. (74 to 75*F? something like that)

We all brought our Igloo Gear, hats, gloves, parkas, and snow supplies, but didnt end up using any of it.
