What is everyone using as far as a steering column when they converted to a manual transmission, Because of accidental lockup of the steering column if the key is turned while driving. I thought of using a manual shift malibu column, but what do you do with your wipers because the malibu had the switch on the dash?

This is the manual trans tilt column currently in my Monte. A local shop put it together for me and explained that it was a G-body unit without going into details about what parts were used.
It has the cruise/wipers/turn signal stalk and plugged into the harness beautifully. The key release lever is my favorite part of the trans swap but it usually goes unnoticed.
Some other information about columns saved over the years has turned into dead links. Good luck going the extra mile on your swap. This is an often overlooked aspect of the conversion.

for safety with a wife and two kids its worth it
At least your wife may be willing to ride in your car. Mine won't...
My kids have their own cars and could care less about the Monte. :(
