Maybe found an engine...

OK so is there an 'exhaust in a box' that is just plain old duels? no H or X pipe?

someone posted this link in another thread about exhaust...

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-680146/

and here's what I found in another forum about the H and X pipes..

"just talked to Flowmaster Muffler co. about some mufflers. The guy told me to be sure to add a cross pipe (H pipe or X pipe whatever you want to call it). The sole purpose was to create the "right sound" IE deep rumble for streetrods. Otherwise he says no performance gain at all with or without it. Put it where ever you want as long as it is in fromt of the mufflers. It apparently alters the mix of sound waves to make a more "pleasing" sound. Gotta admit that if you are a gearhead, their mufflers sound great."

OK, so I've been listening to a lot of exhaust videos on youtube this weekend. And I'm gonna go with the Pypes 2.5" setup. So it'll be another week or two until I get the car back. And rather than notch my xmember or spenn $200+ on an aftermarket one, he's just gonna build an xmember for it. I'm gonna run the mufflers that come with the kit and see if I like them. If not I think I'll throw some chambered turbo tubes on it.

And since the car is up in the air (he has to replace the kickdown cable because it isn't long enough for the new bracket), he serviced the transmission (for free). He said he was amazed at how good everything looked. But said I still need to look for something else (and I agree lol).

So now. He has to do the new exhaust setup, put the new cable on, button up the transmission and fill it, needs a fitting on the carb for the brake booster, put my clutch fan back on (if I can find it lol), tune it, and bolt the hood back on. Then it's all done (until I get a new transmission lol).

too bad your a few provinces from me...I have access to 2 Grand National 200 r4's....one's an 86 with 64,000 kilometers on it...he took it out to put a built transmission for racing and the other is out of an 85 with unknown kilometers but it's still in good shape

Damn, that would be perfect. If I can find a 200r4 cheap enough I would like to get one.

Wow nice timing. I just got back from the shop lol.

OK there's been a major change of plans. Since the Pypes system hasn't even been sent out yet (grr) my mechanic came up with something else. He really doesn't like the fact that my car has that crappy transmission, and really wanted me to upgrade it. So instead of the new exhaust, we're just gonna get my headers hooked up to my existing system (until the summer). And the money I was gonna spend on the exhaust will now be spent on a transmission upgrade. So he's gonna install a 700r4 with a 200 stall and build a cross member for it. Which is kinda funny because I've never been a fan of the 700r4 because of what I have read about the 1st -2nd gear drop. But he told me to take his truck for a drive (has a 700r4) and see for myself how it was. And the drop doesn't feel as bad in person as it looks on paper.

Other than that everything is done. And wow that cam sounds good.

But now I have some questions.

1 - Will I still be able to use my column shifter (1980 3 speed) on the 700r4?

2 - And what about my driveshaft? The current transmission is a 200 or 250 (I can't remember right now lol). Am I gonna have to get mine shortened, or is there one from something else that will fit. It's a 7.5 rear by the way.

For my wagon all i did was weld a little extension to the shifter linkage rod 3" to give it more travel adjusted the linkage and it works perfect. I dont know about the 700r4 but if its the same length as the 200r4 and your running the 7.5 rear then you dont have to cut it. Glad you went with the overdrive, oh by the way my wagon is column shift

I like the engine guys thinking, use what you got to make it reliable then start working on the upgrades ! The 250c trans you have now will not last behind that motor. For the 700r swap the driveshaft will have to be shortened, the linkage may have just enough adjustment left in it to allow for the add'l gear ( I nkow mine did with the 200r4 swap ). Your PRNDL indicator on the dash may read off to one side and you may need some adjustment so the reverse lights and neutral start will line up. Your crossmember should be a close fit, but it will need the trans mount tab cut off and welded it on the other side ( 700r is longer ).

The 700r 1-2 drop is only a pia when at the strip, in daily driving you will hardly notice it and you will love the 1st gear acceleration... oh year you may need to swap the speedo gear in the trans so your speedo will read correctly.
