Suck, squeeze, bang, blow.
In that order.
The next time it comes up to tdc after the intake valve closes is tdc compression.
As said only time with vac advanced plugged. Get it to idle about 700rpm to make sure no advance is coming in.
Its probably not your issue at all, but a while ago the advance weights in my distributor werent returning to closed position so it was getting 8* extra advance at idle and would idle high. Took em off, sanded off rough edges and lubed em and put new springs on. No issues since.

But I digress. Take the valve cover off and watch the rockers move as you turn the engine over by hand. Disable the ignition so it wont start while you're turning it. If the exhaust starts to open youve gone too far.

now I know why there is a shortage of popcorn.......😡

What else you going to do when your waiting.

Wondering if my timing tab is in the right spot it's aftermarket and sitting in the 2 o'clock position 3rd and 4th bolt from top right down I have a 8in balancer if that matters

Doesn't really matter as long as you have marks that line up when #1 is at TDC. You can paint marks anywhere to match the timing tab.

Random addendum. I had a motor refuse to run after I put it together. After much chasing my *ss around and around the car, Old Smart Guy asked if I had primed the engine before or after adusting the lifters. After. 'Put air pressure into #1 spark plug hole at TDC and listed for air blowing out the carb and tail pipe.' Yep, found the problem. Lot of hair lost on that one. Fired right up after repriming with the rockers loose, then adjusting again.
