Hey Doug...I never saw this thread till now 😳 . Sounds like you've got quite a "love affair" going with that Cutlass LOL. As I said in my last PM it's pretty shitty what is happening there. I do hope it all works out for ya.

Kevin

Thanks Kevin. Yeah, we've been thru a lot. Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever get to drive it again. Sometimes it seems like one step forward and two back.

I know how you feel. My car has been with me since I was 19, way back in the time of the dinosaurs...well...Grunge, or 1993 to be exact. It has not been a usable vehicle since about 1999 when I took it apart for a "quickie" paint job. The rust was worse than I thought, and I took it all the way apart to try and fix it right. Unfortunately, my lack of cash kept me from finishing it, and the floors became full of water enough times to rot them out in places, and of course other things were ruined as well. So, I have been trying to put it back to usable over the last few years, but the rust is back in the roof, and the surface of the roof is now showing bubbles under the paint over a very large section. I have reached the point that I don't care and I just want my life back, so it will go together anyways and get fixed again in a few years if I don't just give up.

My problem has been solved! I was telling my boss of my situation and he suggested I store it at his house. On top of that, he wants to get his hands dirty helping me work on it. Cool, some things you just need an extra set of hands to accomplish. So, once I get it to his house on Monday (hopefully) I can pull it back down and finish my frame cleaning/painting. Big load of worry off my chest now!

85 Cutlass Brougham I can well imagine what you are going through. That was the reason for my stripping out the 84 and buying my 86. The rust on the 84 was so bad that I just could not fix it all. Especially since I found a better body. No way could I replace the rust in the 84 for 1/3 the cost of the 86.

I have a tendency to "over-do" things. Things that aren't really in my budget anyway. This car will never be a showcar. It's destiny is to be a daily-driver. Yet, I want it as nice as it can be. Nobody will ever see the floorpans for the carpet and the undercoating. So the small pinholes will not have to be professionally repaired. Just whatever it takes to stop the rust from getting any worse.

What I'm saying is this. It can get to the point that you don't think you'll ever get it done and it's not pleasure anymore but a chore. Especially when it deterioriates faster than you can fix it. So it's not perfect. Get out and enjoy it for awhile. Eventually you'll have the desire to work on it again and you'll be lavishing it with love again. I know, I've been there too! If it wasn't a labor of love, why would you spend so many years and untold $$$ on it.

She don't have to be the prettiest girl in town to have a bunch of fun with!!!

Ok, y'all wanted pics. I hope thumbnails are okay. I'll post a few so you can see what I'm workin' on.

Here I've done just a little bit after getting it. Pulled the front end off and removed the blue interior.

Starting to put in my Claret interior.

My poor cracked dash. Anybody got any ideas on how to fix this on a budget? I've got the correct vinyl dye to dye it after any repairs, I just need to know how to fill the cracks.

Pulled the blue dash to put in the Claret dash and also to run my fuel injection harness, install my other steering column, and mount my clutch/brake pedals.

My mock-up tires. 245/45/17 front & 275/40/17 rears ... hopefully. May just stay with the 245/45's all the way around. That way I can rotate 'em and less chance of clearance issues. This will be a street car, not a track star.

My wheels. Rondell 58's. 17 x 8.5 with 5.25" backspace. I'll probably have to run adapters but the size is yet to be determined.

Cleaning the frame...

Painting the frame and firewall. More cleaning and painting to continue.

Finally got the rest of my suspension off. Now I can do some heavy-duty cleaning!

Stock Cutlass spring on left, Moog 5662 IROC 706# spring on right.

Ready to transport. The city deemed it "unsafe" since I didn't have any suspension and it was up on blocks. I threw all the front suspension back on (sans the front coil springs) and loosely bolted the fenders and header panel back on. The tires were rubbing the fenders since it had no front springs so I jacked it up and put some blocks of wood between the frame and lower a-arms. For transport only!

It's now resting at my buddy/bosses house and so the transformation continues...

Really cool story Doug. I'm glad you still have it and I'm glad you still love it. The trials and hard work should pay off for you.

Having a similar love for these cars and having had one as a second car for years, I now find myself in a similar circumstance in that my Cutlass is my daily.
I work for peanuts now compared to a couple years ago and have $0 for a second car. I barely have enough to keep this one going. Many things will wait.
I applaud your stickwithitness, and if I could, I'd be right over with a case of beer, a toolbox and an eagerness to see you grinning ear to ear in the front seat of your Cutlass.
Keep up the good work 8)

For the dash, you are indeed fortunate. The burgundy interior color seems to hold up the best, and finding a good, used dash should be fairly simple. Just keep looking at the self serve yards and eventually one will show up. If it were beige, you would not be so fortunate as those interiors were crap within a few years of new if the windows were not tinted and the car garaged!

Once again, were you local to me, I would be able to help with your car as I do have a decent store of parts and lots of knowledge about the breed. Sadly, like most of us, I am not close to any other forum members, and I know no one locally who plays with these cars.

I really apperciate the kind words. Not to sound corny or anything but if those words don'y give someone a warm, fuzzy feeling then ya just ain't a caring person.

Yeah, I do have a love for my car. When I was getting it ready to have the flatbed take it to my buddies house, it kinda felt like I was packing up my kid to move out. And yes, at 49 years old, I have helped my daughter pack up and move out when she got married. I *DO* know the feeling!

Yes, you guys are with me. I can't see you and you can't see me. I wouldn't know you if I passed you on the street and you wouldn't know me. But you guys give me inspiration and I hope I can give that back. You give me ideas, guide me through my projects, teach me when I start something new, and praise me when I get something accomplished. Now, after all that, you still think you aren't here with me as I am with you!!?? I don't see my best friends every day, yet I get on this forum...every day. Someone at work will say something and it'll remind me of something a forum member said or related to the board. Just because we're connected through electricity and satellites, don't think for a minute that you guys are not a part of my life. Maybe I need to get a life, I tend to think I've expanded my life and I'm satisfied with my life just fine! Sure it'd be awesome to shake each and every one of your hands and say "Thanks" for all the help you've seen me though with. Maybe we will on our journey's through life. Maybe we never will, but that don't mean you've not had an influance on my life. I only hope to be able to pass along just some of what I've gathered. That is "life".

I fully intend my Cutlass to be my daily driver when it gets to that point. My car will never be the fastest car around but it'll be fast enough to hold it's own. And to scare me  It will never win any awards at a show, but it may get entered so I can proudly say "Here's what I've done and I did it all myself". I know every nut, bolt and imperfection in my car. My car will see the sunny days and the rain. It will see 100* days and below zero nights...out in the open as I have no garage. It will take me to work, the grocery store, to car shows hundreds of miles away, and anywhere else I want to go. I won't be pampered but will be taken care of. Until I can no long afford to or I'm not able to. It may go through vast changes in it's many miles. Will it ever be finished... no.

Yeah, you guys ARE here with me!

On another forum I'm on, it was requested that we at least put our first name in our signature at the bottom of our post. I like this idea and I have mine there. I've talked to so many of you guys and I have no clue as to who you are. I think it would at least be cool to say I got that idea from "Joe" or "Kenny", a buddy on my GbodyForum board.

I'd like to pass along a short video of what my car will hopefully sound like. This car is an LT1 and mine is an older SBC but both are fuel injected 383's with 6 speeds. I emailed him a few times and he recommended it very highly for even my daily driver. Exact same cam. I drool every time I hear this. It sounds so wicked! Enjoy...and thanks a bunch guys!!!

Good to hear that things are coming around for ya Doug! Hat's off to your boss for stepping up like that. I think you've just given me a little more motivation to get going on my stalled Camino project. Thanks for the story.

We're all in this together. They help me, I'm glad I can extend that help, and it just keeps getting passed around for whoever needs it. If we can't stick together, we might as well just give em up!
