Re: 73 Rocket 350 into 87 Cutlass

If your motor had a fuel pump block off plate, they more than likely didn't put the fuel pump eccentric back on the front of the cam during the rebuild

Re: 73 Rocket 350 into 87 Cutlass

This is very similar to what I am doing now with my 1986 Cutlass Supreme Brougham. I have a 1971 SBO 350 Rocket (Gold motor) that I am transplanting into it. Good thing though is that aluminum intake off the original 307 fits perfectly with it and it was free. I might go with a Demon or Holly Carb to give it more power. I am going to use a 2-speed transmission however.

Good Job on the Car! Glad you are keeping that Cutlass an Olds with a SBO instead of SBC. 🙂

Just picked up a Mr. Gasket electric pump so well see.

Was the mechanical pump not working correctly? I personally would stick to the mechanical only because I have had my share of problems with electric pumps. As for the distributor I would go with a Mallory after-market set-up or the 307 HEI. Both are good set-ups.

Re: 73 Rocket 350 into 87 Cutlass

The Mechanical was not working at all. I do believe that they did not set it up to have a Mechanical when it was rebuilt. So I took that off and installed the block off plate again. Installed the Electric pump and it fired up immediately. Sounds great!!!

Where is the best spot to connect my hot to so this pump isn't running all the time with the key on but engine off? Run a kill switch maybe?

Only thing that is leaking anywhere is the oil dip tube that broke off when I installed the headers. I will have to replace that before running it more.

Re: 73 Rocket 350 into 87 Cutlass

Did you check the port size on that 307 intake? If it is from a swirl port, which it should be, it will be 1/2 sized. Couple that with a 2 spd and it will be a dog. The new engines aren't the only reason the new muscle cars are so fast, 5 to 8 spd trans are also a big part. The 2004R is a nice direct swap and will hold up fine to a mild 350, with very few upgrades.

UPDATE

Motor is running great. Finally got to run it long enough to get it up to temp yesterday. I wanted to be able to mix up my new antifreeze to get a accurate freeze/boil test reading. I'm good to -10/222. The beat from the open long tubes hursts my chest, strange. Can't wait to get an exhaust on it. New battery installed.

Did an oil change and topped off transmission when I noticed everything I poured into the trans tube leaked to the ground. Diagnosis, no kick down cable installed. Oops. Went to auto parts store and picked one up for 19 bucks and problem solved.

I'll install these gauges over the Thanksgiving holiday to check vitals.....

Re: 73 Rocket 350 into 87 Cutlass

It's cold today and had to watch the kids for a bit so not much got done today. Cleaned up some wiring that I didnt need, took apart some of the dash to get to wiring, ran a dedicated wire for my fuel pump. I am hoping tomorrow to finish installing gauges, run my th350 vacuum line, find out why my shifter linkage is so tight now, and remove my door panels and rear seat to take home and clean up. I'll try to get a video posted up tomorrow.
