Ah, the aluminum rods make sense for the failure.

Oil pump drive is good. 3 broken rods and/or pistons and/or broken block. #8 plug is REALLY tight, 3 &6 will need Helicoils. The oil and water were still separate,

So the motor locked up due to interference, not oil system issue I.e. spun bearing?

We have all been there brother. Maybe not to that extreme, but been there. Looks like a good excuse to build a bigger engine!

I discussed this with Frank last night. The problem is that we tried to put an Eagle 4.5" crank in this motor, but it was going to be $600 worth of mallory to get it neutral balanced. I have a pipedream of some 1.88 used Nascar rods. He's got a 2.1 425 crank on the shelf, so that's a possibility, too.
You know it's bad when one of the best Olds guys in the country says he's giving up and going Chevy. Performance Oldsmobile engines truly are dying. Maybe I should take better care of the next one........ NAH!

I think some valve springs broke and dropped some valves. Holes in pistons. Lower bottom still looks good. Baffle broke out of the oil pan; not sure where that will lead. So, we're looking at new pistons, a head redeux, and block or block clean up. Huge weight lifted, as it's no where as bad as I was thinking.

Already have aluminum heads? If so, if they are boogered it's an easy weld repair. If not it's a good reason to upgrade :)

That's some good news. Maybe something funny like an air filter stud or nut made it's way into the engine? Breaking multiple springs at the same time seems odd.

Guy I knew took his air filter off at the track but didn't pull the stud. Somehow it ate the stud and the valves cut the stud into little pieces and 5 pistons and both heads got chewed. Same scenario, locked up and few plugs were hard to get out
