My Ford Truck Project (And Other Projects)

Windshield guys came out today. Turns out the existing windshield was a Safelite. Among the things the glass guys said about it were "very sloppy job" and "looks like it was someone's very first install". So I guess whoever put the windshield in last time was very inexperienced or didn't care or both.

But it seems like these guys did a quality job. There was some rust in the one one corner which they cleaned up and hit with a primer which should slow it. They used Fuyao glass which is a Chinese owned company but the glass is made in the US and they are an OEM for a bunch of carmakers. They used Dow Betaseal U-428 Plus which I've read is supposed to be a quality Urethane and most OEMs use Dow Urethane. They guaranteed the glass and installation for life.

Im going to obviously let it cure for a day before I mess with it too much but tomorrow I'll spray it down and I should be able to see if there are still any leaks. If I still have any leaks I know they aren't from the windshield.

Who did the job & do they just work in the North Hills, Allegheny County, or willing to travel alittle? There's a place in Indiana right by IUP I've been using for years but always want some options just in case.

That truck is so lucky you came along Joe. To be honest, at first, I didn't get it as that is not my favorite vintage of Ford truck but you've done a hell of a job with that one. Also, we live in a different world down here. We don't fix rust like that unless if the vehicle is worth big bucks.

Indiana Auto Glass?

They were called Xtreme Auto Glass Pros of Pittsburgh. I do believe they serve pretty much the whole area, so they should be able to travel to you in Indiana. They definitely used high quality materials, the Fuyao glass is not a cheap windshield and so was the Dow adhesive and primer they used.

They weren't my first choice but as I said my usual guy (he's out of West View) is out on medical. I'll have to keep Indiana Auto Glass in mind just in case.

Thanks Jared. I wouldn't expect most people to understand why I did it. By all measures, it wasn't reasonable to repair it, from a financial standpoint or otherwise. It would've been cheaper and easier to replace it. But it was possible to repair it, and I just wanted to prove I could. I also did it partially for sentimental reasons because I knew I'd regret it later if I didn't at least try to save it. When I had it inspected for the first time after all the work and it passed with no issues, that was the best feeling and it made it all worth it.

It's no show truck and that was never the goal, but it's as solid as any of them and it cleans up really nice. I can't put gas in it with at least one person asking me about it.

I like the '73-79s and the '80-86s, but the '92-96s are really my favorite body style. They have a fairly modern interior yet a frame and body that was designed in the '70s. They actually share quite a bit of sheet metal with the '73-79 trucks. This truck isn't an investment, and it never was meant to be, but even though they aren't as collectible as the older trucks, the OBS Fords (Old Body Style, aka '92-96) do have a sizeable following.

The 73-79 is my favorite. Dad had a two-tone regular cab long bed 84 with two gas tanks (she was thirsty) so that body style has a place in my heart.

so they should be able to travel to you in Indiana.
Well I'm closer than Indiana, actually in Elderton in Armstrong County but we ended up with the Shelocta zip for deliver (with the Elderton P.O. a 1/4 mile from the house) & the house on the county books with the Elderton zip. I should just correct my location but cause lazy...
That West View guy, is he on Perry Hwy by West View Plaza? Cause I remember a guy (I knew from the guy I ran with on North Side) that had a small body shop by the Boro building (not that old one that was across from the Amoco/76/Shell gas station) & can't remember if he did glass.
