Yup explains why it feels dead over 6500. I’m guessing shift at 58-6000 and that’s all there is. Enjoy it and don’t worry about. Seems fairly tame but very drivable.
Wait, I would change that to about 6500. I missed the graph and was looking at the chart. Not sure why the chart only goes to 5500 and the graph goes to 6500. but it peaks at 6100 and then kind of goes flat. Optimally I like to shift it past peak hp and let it run up and down over the peak. Like my 565 peaked at 7200 and I shifted it at 7500 and went through the finish line at 7700.

What's in there now?
3:70 gears.
Ported stock heads, I'd guess that's the limiting component. 500hp is a crap ton of power, but all thing BBC are cubic $ imho. I had an aquaintance that had a supposed '500hp' 396 until it hit the wheel dyno and made 240 wheel hp.

Great numbers for a driver though - no rear tire should be safe on that thing. Sounds like you have many good reasons to put some miles on it 🙂
They are not factory heads. They are old steel race heads. I remember when he got them and how big the valves and intake runners were. Probably a lot too do with the lack of power? Too big for the application? I know what you are saying though and agree. Either way it should be a fun hotrod. Thank you by the way.

I kind of figured that was the case. That is what I take from it to. In second gear at 6500 I moving around 80 mph when I shifted into third. I think the gears and combo will work well together? Thanks for the feedback.

Makes me wonder how much power the 396 in the Vega makes? It is a 10.5:1 engine, dome cast pistons, ported factory heads and not as big of a cam. Flat tappet cam. Supposed to be 500 hrp. I know with the exhaust off on av gas it will pull the front wheels and carry them for a long ways. That car is light with prostreet tires though.

3.70s are good on 26" tall tire.

The low compression and assumed big port/valve heads likely is promoting lazy flow and cylinder filling. I'd be curious to know where the cam fits with that decision. Regardless, it still provided decent results as seen on the dyno - so all you need to do now is run it at the track and see how well it works or doesn't.

Is there a casting number under the valve cover or are they aftermarket heads. 2005 there were a few steel options. Not sure if they had the pipe plug in the front of the head though.

I can't help but think how it would take to boost? Seems to me like it would work well with those heads?

Dad said they are Merlin heads that were reworked. It was supposedly built for Nitrous, if that makes sense at all. It has never been sprayed. That would be a bad idea on the street with small tires.

If those heads flow 300cfm +, then the cam is ill spec'd for the build imo based on the looks of hp and tq curve.

If the bottom end is what you've described, then it begs for a turbo. 500hp + 10 psi = need functioning seat belts lol.
