Obviously while transmission warms up!

Once i did a ls2/4l65e conversion. The transmission wasnt getting the corrects signals though. The transmission acted liked you describe. It turns out because of missing signals it engaged several clutch packs at once. A mile later the clutches were toast.

Try draining your oil and look/smell for clutch deposits while you change the converter.

With all this being said, i believe it is your converter though! If the transmission was shifting fine and dandy from 1st to 2nd until you broke it loose with the tires, the odds favor it is the converter..
I poured between 5 and 6 quarts in the trans before I started the engine for break in. After I broke the engine in a ran the engine a little more and with the rear off the ground I put the trans in 1st and let the wheels spin as I added fluid. I ended up with a total of about 9 qts. When I got it out of the garage I added another quart because I knew it would take more. And thats where im at today. I have a 6 foot long puddle running under the car as we speak. Its leaking out of the dipstick hole I believe.

Ok.

Are you using one of those chrome dipsticks?

They're always a pain to seal.

As you know already you need to fix this issue before you take it for a spin. If it's a cheap chinese chrome dipstick i have at several times used sandpaper to rough up or remove the chrome around the area where it seals to the transmission.

Yea I wish! I just wanna drive this damn thing. Been in the garage for 10 months for the engine, trans, and rear swap and before that it was in storage for 7 months with a junk trans! Been too long thats for sure.

Your car would be a fun ride with the big block and a 6 speed just saying!!

Yea its a cheap one. I never had an issue with it leaking before this. Im gonna pull it back out, scuff up the area below the o ring and lather it with rtv then put some more on it after I slide it back in.

Yea I would love to do a 6 speed with 4.10s but student loans have a way of crushing dreams. Like the dream of ever buying a newer vehicle or a house for the next 15 years.

Cool.

I've tried pushing them in thinking all was good only to find out the o ring had pushed itself out of its groove when the dipstick was seated.. But it has only happened for me on the cheap chrome ones.

I hope enerything turns out alright for you and the car.

Be careful with RTV as it always seems to end up in the valve body. You don't need any more grief!!

I got the trans off the engine and slid back far enough to get the old converter off but couldnt get the new one on under the car so I ended up pulling the whole thing out. The trans tipped over on the jack and as a result I have probably 7-8 quarts of pink ATF on the floor. It literally took a hammer to get the old one off. As much as a hated to use one I was beyond pissed off by that time. So the old converter finally came off and I tried putting the new one on. I tried like hell for close to an hour but could not get it seated. I ended up using a rubber mallet and tapped it as I spun it. Its on now and spins freely like it should. Today I gotta get a roll of pig mat and a new pan gasket then hopefully it will be ready to go back in. What a day.

Don't forget to pick up some oil dry...😀

make sure the vent on the transmission isn't blocked

The vent shouldn't be blocked because when I turned the trans over it poured out through the vent. My garage is a disaster zone lol.
