Need some knowledge

81 Malibu 2 door v6...

Just bought the car off a old guy and it has sat for the past 7 years.

He installed a used steering colum recently and needed a starter.

Installed new starter and there is no power at the key what so ever!!

Not in neutral,tree forward, no lights except the inner front and that's it. But....

If you jump the starter it will turn over.

Where should I start? Any wiring diagrams I could follow etc...

Power to the main fuse panel goes through a 12-gauge wire with a fusible link that stacks on the main battery cable at the starter. Make sure that did not get left off. The fusible link will melt if it was shorted, and will typically look black.

Is there any diagrams for the grounds I should be looking for? First Malibu or older car at that lol

google is your friend just type 81 malibu engine bay wiring diagram in search and go to images.... keep looking till you find one that shows all the grounds.
