Hello all, thank god I found this forum. I recently bought a 86 grand prix and have been loving every minute up until today. I was riding along and noticed the check engine light starting to barley flash on and off. Then all of a sudden my baby went to crap. Spitting and sputtering, backfiring and just running real rough. seems to me like a fuel problem, when I hit on the gas is when its at its worse but this being my first g-body I am unsure. Any ideas or suggestions? I tried to take it to auto zone to read the comp but the guy said being that the light isn't staying complely lit it won't read it. PLEASE someone help. Its tooo hot to be walking! I need this fixed. The guy I bought it from said he just replaced the throttle position sensor, nt sure f that would have anything to do with it.

Welcome to the forum,i like the GP I also have a 86 GP.Im kinda unsure about your problem but I also had this and I changed the carb and it has seemed to help??But if I were you I would post your question in the regular forum, you will more than likely find your answer their.

Ground out the ALDL terminals A&B i believe using a paper clip. It's the connector under the dash. Count the flashes from the light it's kind of confusing but they flash 3 times each in a cycle do some research and you could find more info. I am sure the codes are stored to give you a hint of the issue.. But it does sound like a carb issue... 8)

Thanx for the help guys. My first thought was a fuel related issue. If it is the carb would a bottle of fuel treatment/cleaner help the problem possibly? I priced replacement carbs n I can't afford a 400$ carb right now.

Oh,that shouldent be too expensive. You could probally get it rebuilt for 75-100 bucks. You need to yank the V 6 out bro and throw in a 350   Naw im just kidding,I had a 6 in my old 85 GP and it ran great and was good on gas,

Lol..yea the 350 was my first thought when I bought it.. but that'll be a project for later on though. I'm sure the topic has been cover countless times on here but would the 350 be a straight swap? I kno there's a diff between the chevy, poncho, and the buick..would any of em work? I won't be doing the work(nt enough time of space) jus gonna take her to my local shop. But I like trolling the junk yards and wanna know what would be the ideal engine to look for..

Easiest would be to swap your Buick V6 231 for a Buick 350. Its a direct swap swap and all your existing brackets, motor mounts, starter, transmission, fuel & batter lines etc work and are in the right place. In fact there is a post on that very swap on this board currently. Your local salvage yard may be able to computer locate one for you if they don't have any. Anyway for now fix your V6 its generally a very reliable engine. Here is two current posts on that topic.

Ok thanks..now my question is..how do I tell a buick 350? Most of the junkyards round here are the "you-pull-it" kind. Is there any specific vehicle to look for? And yeah I wanna get my v6 back tight..seems to me like its built like a tank..
