Hi all, I'm new here.
I own a 86 Chevy Caprice that is my every day driver. It has a 305. My driveability issue is that of the carb (Rochester quadrajet). It all started when I removed the computer sensor (ecu?) on the top/front of carb. I did so cause it was causing it to have hard starting/hesitation problems. This cured it for a few months until about a week ago.
Now its even worse as I have a very rough idle, hesitation, bogging out taking off from idle and 2500 rpm plus, and repeated stalling. I can only go about 25 mph before it starts badly bogging out and then stall out. I've put it in neutral and revved it up to try to clear the carb out, but didn't help. It acts like its loading up (dumping too much fuel in).

I've came down to that I need to replace the carb, but need to stick with a similar cfm as stock. What is the cfm on a Rochester q-jet. stock for this car?
I'm thinking of an edelbrock carb for their reliability (daily driver here). Any other recommendations?

Also, this smog pump has been driving me nuts anytime I look at it. I think it also may be tied into my issues as explained above. Good or bad idea to remove it all and process involved please?

Thank you,
Jackie.

If you change the carb you have to change the distributor .

You can't pick and choose the removal of computer controlled items.

The smog pump comes right off along with all of the rubber hoses if it annoys you

You can leave the metal tubes in the exhaust manifolds and they should not leak due to the one way valve.

You need a 750cfm qjet.

Contact techg8 on this board he sells and rebuilds carbs professionally.

His shop is called Everyday Performance http://www.everyday-performance.com/

His prices are just about unbeatable and his quality is top notch.

Non computer small block Chevy distributors are common and cheap about 50 buxx shipped on ebay for a new RCR brand

I tried replacing the carb today with a 600cfm edelbrock performer. When I fired it up, no change with my problems, if anything it was worse. Adjusted the idle, mix screws, still no change. Not the carb anymore like I thought it was. Going to put the Rochester back on as it probably had zero issues to begin with.

Again, I'm having rough idle, shuddering (shaking whole car around), missing, bogging, stalling, dieseling on which continues for about a minute (even when low idle/motor dieing). Not sure where to begin with this. Going to try a complete tune up...

I also forgot to mention above that I have it burning oil. I need more help with this, I'm completely confused... I thought I had bad valve guide seals, as it used to only blue smoke upon startup then quit once I was cleared out. Now with the added problems, its smoking all the time, and when rpm increases. Doesn't go away now.
I think its piston rings now, but not sure if that's correct as it was only valve seal guides before all my problems happened a couple weeks ago.

Please help with opinions of what is happening, thanks.

Did the engine run rich at one time ,If it did it probably killed the guides and rings. And with that you should replace and or replace your engine. Because of the oil issues it will constantly foul the spark plugs. And I would go with a 1979 or earlier carb and HEI type system. Because the 1980 electronic Q-jet and HET are designed to work together,
