Olds 350 Question List

What size bolts will I need to bolt the 70 olds 350 to the engine stand? I know I could pull a trans bolt and use that to find out but I wondered if anybody knew already.

Ok so I finally got my olds 350, I ended up getting one from a 72 cutlass. It has the 7a heads and is all original so it is going to need a rebuild. I was wondering if my ac brackets from the 307 would fit the engine.

Yes. You can unbolt EVERY bracket off of your 307, and bolt them on to your 350. They have the same external bolt holes on the front of them. I have the brackets (including the ac) from a '84 307 bolted on the front of my '69 model olds 350.

3/8" bolts on the bell housing. Get the Probe or Speed pro forged flat top pistons and a cam to match. Egge also has various dish sized cast pistons, but are pricey. Your original pistons are huge 24cc dished cast pistons, means around 8 to 1 compression.Headers and dual exhaust are also a good idea. SBO manifolds are very restrictive. A stroker is also possible with sbc 400 pistons and either the early 2" or 1.88" Honda rod journal and off set grinding your crank. You can also use the later 2.1" sbc journal and just grind your crank to match. They both mean a much lighter rotating assembly.

I've done the very same, all brackets/assesories from my 85 442 onto a 71 350. Here's the thing about that though, so correct me if I'm wrong guys, but how would the crank pully line up with everything if the VIN Y motor has a much thinner balancer than the VIN 9 ( which is the same size as all the other Olds small blocks )?

So like I said a couple posts ago I just picked up a 72' Olds 350 2bbl for my 88 Cutlass and this will be my first engine rebuild. Im going to be learning along the way and I have a nice dvd that takes you step by step on the rebuild process. I also ordered me a chassis service manual for the engine. I haven't disassembled the engine yet but I started thinking about what my goals for it were. But Im unsure about what parts to get to make it what I want it to be. This engine will be for my daily driver cutlass im not trying to race this car. I want to have a nice improvement from the 307 but I still want the car to have decent gas mileage and still run off of 87 octane gas. Overall I just want to make this a fun reliable daily driver. The car has a 200-4r trans that I plan on getting built to handle the 350 engine or i will buy an already built 200-4r. The rear end is stock Im not sure what the gear ratio is. I plan on changing the intake to an edelbrock performer intake and using a 4bbl carb. And I also plan on getting rid of the points distributor that came on the engine and upgrade to an HEI. My question is what other parts should I use and what else should I do to achieve my goals for this engine? Which cam (I dont understand the different specs)? Pistons? Valve train? etc.

I have a question, i just bought a 79 Trans am with a 350 rocket, and the fuel pump has the line in/ out's on the top of the fuel pump I'm sure yall know what I'm talking about. It i just cap off the fuel return line will this cause problems?

Why not just start a new thread......? :?

Jeezycol, what is your budget? Are you planning on getting the proper parts and machine work done or are you planning on just doing a 'hillbilly rebuild' ( aka re-ring, re-gasket, clean, slap it all back together and just assume everything's fine)?

Don't remember if you said if you were going to stay on the computer or not with your new engine?

Search the internet for info on cam specs. Too much to explain here, but there's tons of info out there.

I plan on doing a proper rebuild with the proper parts and machine work im trying to do it right the first time around. Im thinking about keeping the computer so I can save money from having to spend on a new carb. And dist. But im kind of confused on what im going to have to do to keep the computer. I haven't thought about the budget since this is my first build but right now im just planning and saving money up.

if you are leaving the computer you will be leaving everything in tact. all the random stuff like egr solenoids and all vacuum lines and i would even be leaving the air pump. it will definetly make the process a little more hectic getting all this stuff back in place but its possible. all of it will bolt up from the 307 to the 350
