Popping from the carb..

It's possible it could be either the cam or timing like the others have said. If changing the timing doesn't work, pull the valve covers & watch the rockers to see if any are loose/clattering around. If all seems well there, next step would be to check the timing chain. If the engine has never been apart it may have quite a bit of slack in it.

Here's what the chain in a 350 from an '88 pickup I used to have did:

alright.. after new cap, rotor plugs and wires... same thing... as expected..

I'll try advancing the timing to see if there is any difference.. my bro said after a rip in the car..he suspects CARB issues... is that even a possibly?

i mean... i apprecate all the input but im trying the small things first. 😀

A carb issue isn't exactly small... it's not nearly as simple of a check as the others...

Something else that popped into my head, make sure you have no vacuum leaks. I had a backfiring issue a while back on the 'Bu and that's what it wound up being.

if you have a lazer temperature gun check the temp of the exhaust manifold at each cylinder. If one or more cylinders are cooler than the others then you have burnt valves. The more you reve the engine the cooler that exhaust should be with a burnt valve....

here's what i did today... advanced the timing and swapped on a good known carb... same issue still apply s .

I'm going to dig into it more this weekend... but for now i still have to drive it to get to work.

so here's a Q... i was going to order a cam from COMP and the install said

i cant use stock springs... and the heads would require machining.

wtf.. it was a MILD cam..

Only couple of times I've had this happen was the pickup wires in the distributor were bad. Did exactly what you describe. put new dist in and no more probs. I went through all the same things, carb, timing, etc. If you've got a spare lying about you might give it a shot.

^^ well... after much weighing of options... i came across a running 355 for $85... so.. that will be in shortly... along with a bunch of other items that should make the car work well...
