so when im in the yards look for a 1st & 2nd gen fbody, 80-86 full size car (caprice) & full size trucks (Tahoe/Suburban), anything else? I'm assuming it must be the v8 option?

Not all b-bodys(caprice) have the 8.5. Look for the wagon versions and cop cars.

Whats wrong with gov lock?

look it up and you'll find all sort of comments like these...

"+1...these seem to grenade quite commonly. Do a search on google for gov-loc units and you'll come up with ALL SORTS of 4x4 websites and forums badmouthing these things.
The company my dad works for has had several rear-ends replaced/rebuilt due to these things going bad--in as little as 20,000 miles from the showroom floor!"

"The ones you are talking about are the ones they make for gm called the Gov-loc or G80 locking diff. They are the time bombs and only came in the newer trucks 84 & up."

A few years back I had the gov-lock in my k1500 come apart , I went to pass someone and it was a little wet outside I guess it spun a bit then caught and BAM.Luckly I was only about 3/4 a mile from where I work and was able to limp it to there. That was a complete rebuild as it split the carrier in 3 pieces and all the shrapnal took care of any thing else.
