Jbrue...no disrespect but if you didn't raise the back end of your car the quarter panel would be sitting on your tires. Myself I like to have the car lowered as I'm interested in the handling of the car as well as having a bit of power. I also like to have the same size and backspacing on each corner of the car. 2.5" difference on eaten side will cause issues unless you have wheels with backspacing to accommodate the differences. I don't see the purpose of using a rear end too wide when there are rear ends out there that fit much better

A body 68 and up had a rear end 4.5" wider than what is on a G body....
nope from backing plate to backing plate from a a-body to a g-body is 1 7/8 inch difference i know because i measured it before i swapped it out

if you think its too close do what i did
remove the axles
grind down the welds in the holes and ba sure to make a mark on the tubes and the housing
cut off 1 inch from each tube
re install the tubes into the center section
weld in the holes in the center section and weld around the tubes
get a set of axles cut to the proper size or have the axles resplined

a body rears are stronger than the b body rears they have non- c-clip axles and if you break one they wont pop out
you can have this done for about 150 with parts and fluids

I know it's not that hard to reduce the width of a rear end and I have access to alot of shops through our race shop for anything we can't do at our shop so it's no big deal for me but since there are rear ends out there that do fit without too much extra work then why bother....the only rear end I know of that came with c-clip eliminators was out of an oldsmobile and good luck in finding any gears for that rear end. A bodies changed to a wider rear end in 68 but if you say it's only 1 7/8 I guess the info online is wrong.

my rear is out of my 70 monte and i had no problem getting a richmond gear and eaton diff.any a body of that year are non c-clip type rears. i speak from experiance. i have been playing with these cars since 1987 while most of these where brand new.

Pontiac GP,
NO disrespect top you either , just making some factual statements here. The 12 bolt 8.875 rears....The Dana 60 and Ford 9 " are also very strong..Super Cheevy did a test of all three last year or so.......They are pretty much right in line with each other. What rears fit much better then the A- Body rears, besides the 8.5 rears??? BTW, I never raised the rear of the car..Only thing I ever did to the rear was replace the stock worn coils springs with the variable rate coil springs made for this car....My back space is 5 " wide.... And UMI Performance and Iceman racing make the a to G body swap kits......I think they know a thing or two 🙂 BUt you know what they say........ To each their own :!:
