Priming instead of painting?

Hi guys
So I’m changing my mind with what the plan for my Cutlass was. Currently planning to swap in a big block and get it actually paint over the winter (should have enough for a good paint job them. Car is currently in bare metal (bought it like that) was thinking about sanding the surface rust off myself and sending it to a local shop to get primed. I was thinking to go with an epoxy primer because I heard it will be able to stand up to the weather. Living just outside Chicago I get all kinds of weather fairly quickly. I want to be able to drive it this summer so leaving in bare metal is not an option and if I drive it to work it may end up sitting in the rain but it will be in the garage at night and during the winter. What problems could this cause for when I go to paint it and what should I be expecting to pay to have the car primed? The car is a hurst olds and is worth painting eventually. The problem is that my theory is once you paint a car and have expectations of it being perfect, it normally falls apart trying to make everything else perfect.

You definitely want a self etching epoxy use a da and buzz off the rust and bring it to a body shop asap paint products are costly if you want I can check tomorrow at work and see what a gallon setup cost you may just want to get some Napa econobody and a $8.00 harbor freight gun tape it up and go for it yourself it's only primer as long as you tape it up good you can't hurt it it's going to get sanded for paint anyway

Certain color's of epoxy will either dull or make a topcoat pop. Epoxy is a great base coat for either a SS or BC.
Primer is easy to paint an its going to get sanded again before paint so a run or dust won't kill it. Cheap guns work but get one with at least #14 tip but #18 works great.

Cost for someone/shop to primer it here in Canada looking at least $1500, and a lot won't do it as they want the whole job.

I will probably have the shop who already gave me a good price do it. I was quotes 3500 to paint it

3500 all the body work and paint is a killer deal

I pulled it out of a friend's barn in Wisconsin. it's the best quote I've gotten so far, they guy does alot of work for one of my friends. Good work at a reasonable price.
