Problem, Knocking??

I once bent some pushrods in the valvetrain, and the sound was similar. But it was distinctly coming from the valve cover. And PontiacGP is right, it also sounds like a steering pump, which relates to why you are hearing it at the front of the engine.

... however, it doesn't explain why the engine wants to die out?
Pull off your aircleaner, and plug in a vacuum gauge to one of your intake port lines, or a main port line in the carburator. If the vacuum is jumping around really bad, it might valvetrain related.
you can find these at a PrincesAuto or a place that sells or works with compressors and airtools.

make sure it's not a pressure gauge, it should read "inHg" , not "psi"

a power steering pump that is seizing up can put a drag on an engine and possibly shut it down at idle. That's why I suggested to remove the belts to see if the knocking is still there..you'll either find the problem or cut down on the possibilities

I see... this would also explain a "squeel" from the belts themselves. If the pump is jamming, the belts will slip and squeel.
right?

yup....I'm not saying for sure that is the problem but it's hard to pinpoint an engine noise so I always do what's easiest to get rid of some possible causes to narrow it down

I'm sure they sell them anywhere... But you don't need a fancy one that costs $40... You can get one from a tool store, for under $6... That's why I recommended a place that works with compressors and pneumatic tools.

Thank you and matter of fact I have a very very bad leak in my power steering pump as soon as I put fluid in, in a matter of 5 minutes it will all be on the garage floor.
So i will take the belt off, I will also buy a whole new pump cause of the leak.

you ran the pump dry so that probably is the problem and if you removed the belt the noise should be gone. It does not take long to fry a power steering pump. I'd check the pump before I bought new gauges...
