So i take my car to my mechanic the other day to get the dual exhaust done with the Jegs Header kit for 78-88 cutlass, regal, etc and to get the power booster done. Normally I would do the power booster myself but time hasn't been something I have had a lot of and as for the exhaust well that is a bit of a pain. Anyway, to make a long story short he tells me the kit from Jegs doesn't fit right at all and has to do a lot of modifications to make it fit to my headers on the 307. In addition to that he tells me my gas tank all of a sudden is leaking. Now, I'm all for the exhaust problems but the gas tank leaking? My vehicle has been sitting in the driveway for 4 months in the same spot on an asphalt driveway and gasoline would have dripped and more than likely broke down the asphalt and made a hole in my driveway. I am so suspicious about the gas tank leaking I don't know what to say.

Your gas tank may have been rusted but with you leaving it stationary for 4 months it may not have leaked until driving it which may have dislodged some of the rust scale allowing the tank to leak.

Thats true but I still think something is fishy with my mechanic bacause he said he was having a difficult time fitting the exhaust near the rear and then he said ohhh and your gas tank is leaking. It kinda seemed like he slipped with something and hit the tank.

Well, it would be easy to tell if your tank is leaking due to a puncture or due to rust.

Keep in mind this car is over 20 years old . . . I've seen tanks leak on cars only a few years old, especially here in NJ.

I saw a newer Mustang that had once sprung a gas leak and someone acutally used black silicone to plug the hole in the tank by the filler neck. Well, that only lasted so long because it started leaking again.

Replacing the tank is actually a fairly easy job-four bolts and a few hose clamps and the tank is free.

it's not too easy to puncture a gas tank that's in good shape and like Brick said it'd be real easy to see if it was punctured. If the tank was rusty and the mechanic did accidentally cause the leak you shouldn't be expecting him to buy you a new tank to replace a 20 year tank. If that was the case I'd be seeing if he'd made a deal with you....see if he'll sell you a tank at his cost...and if he can't then you buy the tank and he installs it on his time..

Does anyone know where i can buy a new tank for a gbody?

There's two places you could get a tank from at a reasonable price. 1-800-RADIATOR sells tanks, sending units, and other parts at wholesale prices. The shipping is usually reasonable also. The other company is SPI, here's a link to that tank (p/n GM3A) http://prod.spectra-ssl.com/PROD/apps/e ... RS=1.07.01 You would have to call them for a price, but there usually reasonable also.

One other place is rockauto.com. They list a GM309A for $137 + s&h.
